I actually feel this applies to a bunch of other genres that play with similar elements, like Life On Mars/Ashes to Ashes, or to the upcoming series 2 of Russian Doll of which I am nervous. Part of the magic of non-reality can be the... lack of explanation? I don't want to know how it all works, the rules of it all. Let it hang in the unexplained and have a much grander weight because of it.

Totally agreed. Too often shows are pushed past the point where they should end because they're an easy cash cow.

Super disappointed they're making RD season 2. That was a standalone series if I ever saw one.

With Life on Mars (original version), I feel it set a nice balance between not fully committing to either direction. Then Ashes to Ashes came along and leaned so heavily on the idea it was in her head that it took all the mystery away.

Yeah, I agree. I hate the 'it was a dream' or 'they are just crazy' or whatever things they do that make it all basically mundane.

I *do* like to have some kind of...not necessarily explanation (I don't need a rundown of every. single. thing....) But it would be nice if the supernatural stuff made some kind of sense and had a workable frame to all hang on, though.

Just whack-doodle out of nowhere stuff is just as frustrating, to me.

Yeah, I like a good frame too, weirdly shaped tho it may be

Super happy you remembered what you saved that picture for, and IA 100% on the secret itself.

Yeah, I almost always hate when stories pull out mundane explanations for seemingly supernatural plots. But "it was all in the character's mind" explanations are the worst, IMO.

The “crazy” stuff can be pretty offensive, too. Like “actually, her evil alternate personality murdered all those people.”

A. I like what you're saying here yes. Just let it be what it is.

B. Omg lmao i love that you came back with this picture. You're the best OP

All I can say to this is: Read Umineko no naku koro ni (a visual novel, but with no branching choices). The magic VS real horror in there is one of the plot points, and it's excellently done. Beware that the two first arcs are not as good as the rest of it, Umineko only gets better with each chapter. So many twists and turns!

Isn't it just yet another example of the thing secret OP says they hate?

I agree to a certain point. I like ambiguity, or when the supernatural/is my mind fucked up blurs the line (like, say, Amnesia), but I still prefer the supernatural to be mostly real.

A lot of the "all in your head stuff" seems to be another take on "was just a dream"
