Same for the most part. There are a few authors that I trust enough to read their WIP, but other than that, nope, I'm waiting until it's done. Been burned way too many times.

Same. I feel like I have the worst luck too. I have multiple fics that are 150k+ and updated on a steady basis for multiple years that just stopped shortly after I started reading them. I feel like I am a WIP killer and so I stopped reading them for the good of all fandom-kind.

I've never done this, but I like the idea.

I never used to read WIPs, but then I got into a smaller fandom where I burned through all the completely fics for my ship in a couple of months, and all that was left for me to read was WIPs. Also, like four of the best-written fics in the fandom are abandoned WIPs. *cries*

This is me. I'll bookmark a WIP but I won't read it until/unless it gets finished. And if it goes a long time without an update, I let it go into the ether.

Yep, I'll bookmark ones that look interesting but won't start them until they're finished. Which is totally hypocritical of me because I definitely want people to read my WIPs. The rare exceptions are for fandom friends who, like me, have proven track records of updating regularly and actually finishing in a timely manner.

i learned my lesson when i was reading a WIP that, after the penultimate chapter, and right after dropping a HUGE cliffhanger, the fic was never updated again. every so often, i go in and check and it still hurts to see "Chapters: 5/6"

I read and enjoy WIPs, even ones that have been discontinued. Just fodder for me to daydream the endings, really, but I do understand why some people might not enjoy them.

May I recommend the Luke/Bodhi Rook ship? Small but mighty, with some gorgeous works that give a lot of weight to Luke's character depth and values while also just having him be a young twink having his hot girl summer. I Guess I'll Know When I Get There by Eisoj5 is an absolutely glorious work of art I'll be reccing til I die, even to people not in the fandom, and Stone and Sand by SassySnowperson is pretty damn great too!

I actually feel this applies to a bunch of other genres that play with similar elements, like Life On Mars/Ashes to Ashes, or to the upcoming series 2 of Russian Doll of which I am nervous. Part of the magic of non-reality can be the... lack of explanation? I don't want to know how it all works, the rules of it all. Let it hang in the unexplained and have a much grander weight because of it.

Some of the teen shows of that era had legitimately good eps and plots early on. The fact that most descended into ridiculousness does not change that.

I think that's fair. There's always an element of performativeness and exploitation to it.

It reminds me of how in ye olde times in London eating whelks became fashionable. They were poor people's food and the wealthy elite started a trend for eating them alongside working class people. Jump forward a few centuries and you can see the same behavior in rappers. Middle class black guys rapping with lyrics like they grew up in deprivation. I think it's a desperation to show that they're not sheltered and soft in some way. IDK. There's something there in human nature anyway.
