[I Care a Lot (on Netflix)]

(Anonymous) 2021-03-19 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe it's art imitating life? evil psychopaths in real life often co-opt feminist talking points to use as a shield for their bad behaviour. it must be on the first page of the abusers hand book "find a way to make yourself look like the victim".

(Anonymous) 2021-03-19 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the movie, but I get what you mean with this.

If you have a female villain in a man's world, who has to fight people with more power than her to get to the top, that's one thing. But in a movie like this where your female villain is a vile parasite who preys on the helpless, jamming a bunch of feminist talking points in her mouth is kind of shitty.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-19 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't watch the movie but presumably the ironic juxtaposition is the point?

(Anonymous) 2021-03-19 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That was the point. The movie is about showcasing how white women will weaponize feminism to their benefit while punching down on others, in this case the elderly. It doesn't make the misogyny any less bad, but it's all to show how a white patriarchal system feeds into and consumes itself. No one wins, we all loose.

God that sounds unbelievably tedious.

This sounds a lot like that feminist character on The Boys who turned out to be a Nazi.

You got to give society props really. In our deeply messed up society where the rich are above the law and almost all white men, it's middle aged white feminists who have become the monster. I guess they look vaguely like the shape of the real problem, and they're an accessible target because most middle aged white feminists are just regular people.

I’ve seen middle aged white feminists. Some of these people are terrifying, e.g. https://www.tumblr.com/blog/view/transrapeculturemisogynyreceipts

(Anonymous) 2021-03-20 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
What you mean is you find them objectionable personally. There's nothing there that can actually threaten you personally. On the other hand, you have a behind the scenes global oligarchy of men of all races that protects itself and regularly gets away with murdering people to do so (the Panama papers journalist, the guy who went public with the fact that there were no chemical weapons in Iraq, undoubtedly countless more off the radar). One of the first things Biden did was to put a Monsanto stooge in charge of the EPA.

But yes, women who are so over men's bullshit, they're the real problem.

They can't threaten me because I have an independent income. If you're a trans woman whose income source relates to social media, they love to threaten you.

Wtf has age got to do with it? Oh, easy target, I get it.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-20 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Easy target, especially for misogynists.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-20 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
age matters if you're old enough to know and act better. if you're my age or older behaving like a goddamn teenger you bet i'm going to judge you for it, man or woman.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-19 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Fucking this. Thank you.

White women can absolutely be shitty people, but wow it's telling how fine people are with throwing feminism under the bus.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-19 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk I think it's okay to have some villains who are white woman

(Anonymous) 2021-03-20 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
Of course it is, when you're looking at a wide selection of nuanced characters. Instead you've got a new pattern appearing and it's an ugly one.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-20 10:40 am (UTC)(link)
It reminds me of the wicked witch thing in fairytales. A woman past childbearing age who isn't bothered about men? Must be evil.

+1

(Anonymous) 2021-03-19 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
If it helps all the characters in the movie are awful people, there's no one to 'root' for because the point of the narrative is that everyone is fucked in white-capitalist cultures. So white men aren't portrayed any better than this horrible white lady. Everyone's shit.

It's a critique on the system more than the people, but the people are being used to showcase this.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-20 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
If the system is so shit, why is it that white countries in Europe have the best gender equality globally, the best rates of happiness of citizens, best education, and are best for LGBT rights? Hmmmmm.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-20 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
If you're not willing to even entertain the slightest criticism of your own system (criticism often coming from parties residing within that same system), and are jumping straight to, "We don't need to examine anything! How dare you attack white women/white countries when we're clearly superior to men/racist POCs/those *other* countries!" then it's safe to say you're exactly the reason this criticism exists.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-20 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
Criticism is one thing. Having to hear about how it's evil when we're also the countries who are supposed to take in every single brown person fleeing persecution of their sexuality just gets really ridiculous after a while. Oh you came here for a better life? Sorry that can't be possible because we're all evil. But you're brown so it's fine because brown countries cannot possibly be as evil so why don't you fuck off back there.

I'm glad to see so many critics hating on this movie. I couldn't get past the first fifteen minutes.

"It's a critique of our society!"

Well, as a disabled person, I don't wanna watch it.

I meeeeeaaaaannnn, it pretty clear that this is a the strategy of complete assholes in real life, that once some type of understanding of society's ills have enough power that people will ask you to stop doing them, and validate those who are "tearing them down" that in order to maintain their self-centered behavior assholes have to co-opt the language that will give them the most power to continue their behavior.

it's intolerable in real life ala "piers morgan saying that people are calling him slurs" so i'm sure it was very annoying watching it fictionally.
