The 16-year-old could have just as easily gotten pregnant with a same-age or younger partner. They were having sex and being unsafe. When I was in high school, I dated a classmate and subsequently, an older guy. The classmate was the only one I had sex with, so if pregnancy is the only metric to go by, then you would say the same-age relationship was more dangerous.

AYRT

I personally don't think that 16 year-olds should be having sex at all, but I was compromising my own beliefs because people claim they managed to be safe with it. I justify it with the thought that at least the power difference isn't that extreme. I can't stop all underage sex from happening, but at least I'd like there to be more education and public opinion against uneven/predatory relationships.

I think that's a deeply unrealistic belief. Not to mention, as you say, you can't stop all underage sex (or any at all)-- people have in fact tried this! It's "abstinence only" sex-ed, and it has been proven a colossal failure across the board. It's just not how puberty works-- teens get horny. Extremely horny. It is completely, 100% natural and normal for teens to explore sexuality, and it honestly makes me sad that it's been so demonized and shamed.

Don't you accuse me of being an abstinence-only proponent. I said that I wanted more education and public knowledge aimed at underage teen relationships so the situation in regards to the pregnant 16 year-old and 24 year-old could be avoided more. That would be covered in a good sex ed/family planning class.

More education, yes. Stronger public opinion, depends what you mean by that. From your personal admission of being against teen sexuality, to your implied skepticism of other people's "claim", I can't help but detect a desire to exert control over others' behaviors. Did you mean to sound like that?

Really, all you have to go on here is one anecdote of a relationship where the age gap was a factor resulting in a bad outcome. You neglect to consider that a) the same outcome can happen in relationships where age gap isn't a factor if safety isn't prioritized and b) society already frowns upon a teen dating someone ten years their senior. That relationship already isn't the norm for teenage relations, but I doubt shutting them out altogether is going to do anything to lower the rates of teen pregnancy, because teens can impregnate each other, and frankly that is way more common.

Do you really think that mutually consensual sex between two teenagers is automatically bad? That's... kind of a right-wing conservative position. I can't think of any real progressive justification for that point of view. 16 year olds have strong sexual urges, they're romantic, they're falling in love, they want to fuck. And of all the sexual things two people can do together, there is only ONE act (PIV) that carries a risk of pregnancy, and there are a LOT of ways to prevent that even in over-the-counter products.

LMAO 16 is the age of consent in my country. Fecking ridiculous.

LOL.

That's it, that's all I have to say. LOL. 16-year-olds absolutely have sexual urges and desires and if you think they don't then you're dumb as shit. If they're shamed from ever acting on them, that's how you end up with people who are afraid of/ashamed of their own sexuality.
