Goosebumps covers are so damn cool though. Up there with Animorphs for serial charm.

Hahaha, yes! I was so drawn to them as a kid!

I mean you're not wrong but like. Goosebumps books are extruded shaped entertainment product. John Bellairs is an actual fuckin' writer. It's almost unfair to even compare the two, and Goosebumps books are totally fine for what they actually are.

I loved Goosebumps as a kid. I know they weren't great in terms of writing skill, and they weren't even particularly scary, but they were fun.

I loved them too. I think the only one that lowkey freaked me out was the one where the narrator turned out to be dead all along because I wasn’t expecting it.

That freaked me out too!

It was The Haunted Mask for me. That one legit horrified me as a kid. Honestly, if a formidable author took the bones of that story and rewrote it, I think it might genuinely horrify me today.

Just here to be happy over the John Bellairs mention! I still want a fuss closet. And a magical Wurlitzer.

Agreed, was happy to see Bellairs mentioned. I wish he was more known. The HWCiiW movie had SOME good moments but not all of them were from Bellairs...the bad parts of the movie dumbed his writing down. Happily I fixed the movie in my fanfic.

Rose Rita's a great character though. I'm pissed we may never get a movie of The Letter the Witch and the Ring.

Ayrt - I haven’t watched the movie yet... is it still worth the watch? A part of me wants to re-read first and sketch out the images I had built in my head as a kid before watching, too.

This may be true, but what did the kids want to read? Goosebumps. So what did we stock the library with? Goosebumps.
