I'm with you. I hate first person. To each their own, but personally it throws me out of a story. It just doesn't work for me.

I'm not a fan of first person POV, either. Most writers just don't do it well, IMO. It works in situations where there's a great narrative "voice", but that's rare.

I think it can work well in the hands of a really good writer. As much as I love fic, fic writers are rarely very good writers.

It only works if the author can emulate the character's voice. So, not often.

First person already isn't my favourite but more often than not in fic it's just BAD.

In official published fiction it depends, but it often still doesn't work for me.

I don't hate it but I guess I do have a preference, third over first. I'm more concerned about tense; I cannot with present tense.

Steven Brust’s Vlad Taltos series is the only fiction that comes to mind where I really enjoyed the first person POV and felt it enhanced the series. It helps that Vlad was an adult protagonist who had a really distinctive (and amusing) voice, and I wasn’t reading fic of the series.

Almost every other incidence of first person POV in fiction? No thank you.

First person POV in fic? I cannot slam the back button hard or fast enough. Even if I could tolerate the POV on its own, it’s unlikely to the point of impossible that any random fic writer’s take is going to echo how I hear the character, so how can I buy into this fic when I don’t recognize the voice whose POV you’re supposedly writing?

I did enjoy (or at least didn't mind) the use of first person in things like Sherlock Holmes or Nero Wolfe. Especially with Archie in Nero Wolfe, he comes across as a very clear character with compelling mannerisms.

But since most of the fiction I read these days is fanfiction, I have to say that I think there's a particular problem with trying to introduce first person narrative into a non-first-person context. You have to make writers believe that you can nail the character's internal monologue and that's a really hard thing to do.

LMAO @ the picture. And I can understand your frustration, OP, especially if your OTP *is* getting prompts and no one is filling them. It would be frustrating to see people passing up the opportunities for more stories about the thing you like.

(I also spent my afternoon on The Old Guard kink meme and the Umbrella Academy kink meme, so if it's one of those two, feel free to rant even more. I like salt. 👀)

I love a good romance, mm mf or FF. Problem is virtually no romance in mainstream media is good. Badly written, rarely good chemistry between any actors, usually tacked on to any other plot. Bland bland bland blah blah blah.

I don't see anything wrong with what you are doing, but I feel like this is kind of what libraries are there for - books to read for free.

Our local one is open in a modified way - you put books on hold and can pick them up (returns and check-outs were already automated before the pandemic). But there are also several online library services we can get through our library like Hoopla and Overlook. And then there's the Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/).

I don't think that many people call for banning all underage ships. People object to sexual depictions of underage ships, and especially RPF ships, where real life minors are being sexualized.

It's already the case in YA, where sex is depicted as either a fade-to-black, or the characters are 18 when they engage in it on-screen.
