(Anonymous) 2021-03-22 01:17 am (UTC)(link)1st person was the rage in UF back in the early 2000s, so I feel your pain. 1st person and present tense can be done well, however, it takes a very honed editorial pen. Like, The Dresden Files didn't really hit their stride until the 3rd book. (And his first book was a complete and utter mess of a first draft anyways. But editing made it slightly better.)
I've read somewhere 3rd Limited is the voice of the 20th century. And I know we're in the 21st, but I can't disagree with that entirely. I find 3rd Limited a tad more difficult to write b/c the lines on where limited END varies so differently depending on who you talk to. I write in 3rd Omni both original fic and fanfic wise. (I have like one 3rd limited in my WIPs and it's a Mystery where she's trying to solve her own murder and 3rd Omni would ruin the mystery.) And I've had my 3rd Omni stuff called "unprofessional" and I'm like "Okay good bye then?"
TL;DR. First POV and present tense needs lots of well honed editing it usually doesn't get. I will stick to my 3rd Omni and past tense, thank you.
