Hmm, I always got books for every birthday and Christmas, spent a lot of time at relatives' houses who had a lot of books, from rare first editions to ratty paperbacks, and my aunts had all of the Nancy Drew books (guess that's a collection, though). Buying books was really common? There were lots of indie bookstores and several mall chains before Borders and Books A Million, you know. I used to haunt a used bookstore downtown as a teenager in the 80s.
