It irritates me that Dragon Age is trying to play the Templars vs. Mages conflict like both sides are valid.

Mages are literally imprisoned and denied basic rights. Of course they're going to turn to dark magic and demons; they're desperate.

Tbh, I've never seen an oppressors vs. opressed story where both sides were valid. And I don't actually think there is one.

Babylon 5 managed a nuanced approach where it was clear that the Centauri were the oppressors, but it was also clear that the majority of the Narn were stuck in the hate and violence cycle and that even if they had valid reasons to hate, the ways they were reacting were just going to lead to more war and ultimately the end of both species.

I mean at the point where you identify one side as an oppressor, that side is definitionally not valid
