I did enjoy (or at least didn't mind) the use of first person in things like Sherlock Holmes or Nero Wolfe. Especially with Archie in Nero Wolfe, he comes across as a very clear character with compelling mannerisms.

But since most of the fiction I read these days is fanfiction, I have to say that I think there's a particular problem with trying to introduce first person narrative into a non-first-person context. You have to make writers believe that you can nail the character's internal monologue and that's a really hard thing to do.

+1 for Nero Wolfe. I adore Archie as a character.

re: Sherlock Holmes...right?? I don't think I ever stopped to think "this is in 1st person" it's just excellently written so that the narrative voice means nothing. I know there are more examples of it to show that it is a perfectly viable narrative device, or at least was at some point, but I prefer 3rd person so much that my brain isn't latching onto other examples.

Yeah, if the original media isn't first person, fic in first person is just kind of jarring. It can work, just like a TV show can do an episode with first person narration even if that's not normally what they do, but in fic most of the time it just doesn't work for me as a reader. If the original media is first person, I would expect first person fic!

Sometimes that's really important! Sherlock Holmes fic (ACD original) that isn't in first person feels "off" to me. Of course it can be done and I've read some good ones, but it's more difficult for me to get immersed.

Most of the stories are Watson's POV (although there are two that are Holmes), and it doesn't matter to me in fic which one it is - though I think Holmes's voice is harder to get right, there's a lot of reward in it if it's good.

I agree with you. SH fic that isn't written in first person feels very off.
