I was going to say, if you're worried about writing about 17 year olds just falling in love and kissing, you're in good company with every YA author ever...

...and then I remembered what happened to John Green. So I wish I could say your fears are completely unfounded, but if you unlucky enough to draw the attention of people like that, I think it could really happen.

I only know John Green from when Tumblr chased him off the site by editing his posts to be about porn.

Yeah, this. The harassment campaign against him is IIRC the reason why you can't edit reblogs of other people's posts anymore. (God, I can't believe that was ever a thing, shudder).

People thought it was creepy that a YA author had a lot of teenage fans. As opposed to...?

It happened to John Green because he's John Green. Aside from the huge level of fame, he's always been more connected to Internet communities than your average author. Hell, he still is, just not on Tumblr. I watched a YT video of him just the other day. So what they did to him was trash but he's not canceled, and obviously the YA romance genre chugs on as it ever did.
