It happened to John Green because he's John Green. Aside from the huge level of fame, he's always been more connected to Internet communities than your average author. Hell, he still is, just not on Tumblr. I watched a YT video of him just the other day. So what they did to him was trash but he's not canceled, and obviously the YA romance genre chugs on as it ever did.

Eh. Maybe so. Have you considered posting the story on a fresh blank account that's not connected to any of your other online personas? If people do get mad, they have no way of knowing your age or who you are, so it shouldn't matter as much.

I started writing a high school AU of my OTP after having a dream about it and no one has complained to my face about it yet. I'm just worried that if/when the fic becomes more sexual, people WILL start to come out of the woodwork. I don't think adults writing about teens having sex means they're paedophiles or whatever. Teens have sex. Even adults can acknowledge this without being 'predators' or however the antis want to frame it?

Antis are awful but you are ceding way too much power over to them. You're turning them into huge boogeymen that succeed at silencing people without even having to interact with them at this point.

If you're not comfortable attaching your name to something, do what we've always done on the Internet and post it anonymously. And before that one anon comes in to fear-monger about "tech-savvy" antis who can suss out your identity, really think about that claim for a minute. You think anyone will go to that much effort over some no-name Internet person?

From what I understand it, it's more the fear of word of mouth and reputation. Even if the word "pedophile" is becoming so exaggerated in fandom and internet circles, with the actual harm to minors becoming muddied in the waters, people are still terrified of being accused of that.

Who accuses you? Do they exaggerate your story? Will this person that you only met once embellish a story to ruin your reputation for their own or because they hate you? How many would believe it? Those are things that can run through a person's mind.

A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still getting its shoes on.

I have seen friends that were accused of similarly horrible behavior in social media, and that can cause you to lose your job, your family, your friends. It is absolute terror for which the accused also deserves the help and the time to say their piece.

Even if the people accusing you are nobodies, they can still cause genuine harm. Not only to the person if they turn out to be innocent, but to the victims of the actual crimes the moment people stop believing the accusations.

The only way to be absolutely safe if you have this level of fear is to cease interaction with all human beings, period. It's just as likely that you'll piss off a rando at work and they'll spread horrible lies about you. In fact, it's more likely. There are literally millions of fanfics on the Internet, many of them way more questionable than a story in which high school-aged teens kiss (???). For all the grief antis have caused, I've yet to see even them reach that far.
