...I mean it's not a stretch for modern day, or is it that everyone is portrayed that way?

This got a laugh out of me

I don't think it's a stretch either or that the artists are trying to make them white. But I will say that when I see modern AU of LWJ with short hair my immediate reaction is "That's not right." So it is a pet peeve? but I dislike modern AUs in general anyway.

IIRC it was the Yunmeng siblings who all had lighter brown hair, and in some cases, grey/blue eyes. I could buy individuals dyeing their hair lighter, but a whole family?

Sorry, guess I'm extra suspicious because this is the same fandom who randomly portrays the Qinghe Nie clan as black.

...I mean, a lot of Chinese people dye their hair lighter brown? That would seem pretty normal in any group of young people to me?

I think this has less to do with them trying to make them look white and more (read most if not all) to do with them taking the actors' styling in Untamed unrelated photoshoots as a basis for their fanart rather then the actual Untamed characters.

Um Imma say that's a reach.

I also prefer art based on The Untamed over art based on the donghua, but mostly because I can't fuckin' tell anyone apart in the donghua.

It's not necessarily an attempt at an ethnic marker. In places like China and Japan, it's really not uncommon for people to put some subtle streaks or colouring in their hair to change up the basic black.

And if I remember the book correctly, WWX and LWJ's eyes were grey and gold-lacquer respectively. It's a fantasy story - people like to play with appearance.
