I mean yes you should go ahead and do it

but I wonder if the backlash to Disney's story being a mishmash is sort of...we don't yet have enough distinct cultural takes yet so we're still waiting on "based on a Lao tradition," "based on a Chinese novel from 700 CE," and "based on a Tibetan legend" to be able to exist simultaneously. So while a mishmash in and of itself isn't necessarily bad, is it premature considering we don't have mainstream representation of all cultures yet? or did social media whip itself into a representation frenzy prematurely? Or did Disney allow social media to jump on some idea of what they thought it would be, knowing it was instant promotion-bait, while knowing full well that it wasn't at all what social media thought it would be? Or did Disney push that this was their new Asian representation, disingenuously? ORRRR did Disney intend none of the above and just milked a new segment of the world for a story idea without giving two shits about the societal implications? OOOOORRRRR are we so used to judging Disney's stories because before they were actually only based on a single story, be it a book or a legend, but now they're grasping at straws because they've adapted all the good fairy tales and don't know what to do besides build an original that has inspiration in multiple sources but we're Not Ready for that....?

honestly I'm just. at this point, while I don't trust Disney further than I can throw them (about three feet if I get a good running start), I also don't trust fandom or social media or fandom ON social media to have the right idea from the first place, have the right idea after doing some research, or have the right idea after seeing the thing and digesting it. If it's a good movie then it's a good movie, and if it sucks in some area such as storytelling or characters or stupid comic relief mascot animals, then tell me that. If Disney came out and said they wanted to make a movie based on a Chinese story and then slammed in a bunch of different SEAsian cultural references and justified it as "well it's all more or less the same, right?" THEN we can talk about shitty motives. Until then? I don't know who to believe anymore.

I don't know what Disney said or not about Raya, just popping in to say I have this same exact feeling when it comes to mishmash of Asian cultures. For me, my go-to example is Avatar the Last Airbender. On the one hand, as a Korean, the small pockets I see representing my ethnicity in Avatar is great. On the other hand, I feel I don't see enough of it in the show. But also Avatar came out in 2007 when I was starving for ANY content with Asian leads and representation. While it's gotten better since, I'm just like, yes, I would absolutely love media to individually tackle each of the varied culture and backgrounds of Asian countries and its people. I would love to see more of the media I consume that is very specifically tied to MY culture (this is why Kim's Convenience is such a blessing to me), but until then, well, we gotta start somewhere. Though with the addendum that yes, stuff like this is long overdue.

Being cynical for a moment, Disney's playing it safe by doing the mishmash: If they want the Chinese audience('s money) they really full stop -can't- do anything explicit re: Tibet, Mongolia, Xinjiang, Hong Kong...
