I don't know what Disney said or not about Raya, just popping in to say I have this same exact feeling when it comes to mishmash of Asian cultures. For me, my go-to example is Avatar the Last Airbender. On the one hand, as a Korean, the small pockets I see representing my ethnicity in Avatar is great. On the other hand, I feel I don't see enough of it in the show. But also Avatar came out in 2007 when I was starving for ANY content with Asian leads and representation. While it's gotten better since, I'm just like, yes, I would absolutely love media to individually tackle each of the varied culture and backgrounds of Asian countries and its people. I would love to see more of the media I consume that is very specifically tied to MY culture (this is why Kim's Convenience is such a blessing to me), but until then, well, we gotta start somewhere. Though with the addendum that yes, stuff like this is long overdue.
