I'm not surprised they took it this route tbh.
What did they canonically do? Trail individuals of interest and remember who and what they interacted with?

Just reminds me of ask reddit threads where people discover that private investigators spend most of their time inside their car doing eff all.

Why be surprised they took that route? Gathering intelligence, finding lost people and things can be boring IRL, yes. But this is television. Television shows are made about detectives and private investigators all the time. I don't understand your logic here.

And yet, private investigators have been one of the most consistently popular characters/themes in movies, books and TV series for decades. You can spruce a profession up to make it more entertaining without jumping straight to saving the world from supernatural threats.

Especially in historical fiction, where much of even daily routine will be new and 'foreign' to the viewers

I mean, this particular objection is extra amusing to me, because it's talking about a show that expands the world of a private investigator. On top of that, one of the most beloved fictional private detectives/investigators of all time. To suggest that characters engaging in PI-like activities in such a show wouldn't be enough of a draw by itself does not make much sense.
