I don’t know much about this particular example, but I generally feel the same about a lot of things. Plots and characters and settings are often (or at least have the potential to be) interesting enough on their own. Not everything has to have some kind of supernatural element to it. Lost, I’m looking at you. Sleepy Hollow, I’m looking at you. And so on...

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, and also, not every show needs to have an arc plot either

Hard same. Small stories are good too!

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Lost, I'd agree with, although disaster survival series aren't my thing. Sleepy Hollow is an odd one, though. The original story is ambiguous but almost certainly mundane, yes. In adaptations, though, I'm not sure how good it would be to follow that. You could get a movie plot out of what is, essentially, an exceptionally cruel prank resulting in a disappearance. It'd fit right in with a lot of psychological/crime/horror movies out there. It just feels a bit flat, maybe? If you meant the TV series, though, without the supernatural elements it just plain wouldn't have a plot.

I'm so with you!! I was really into Lost for the first bit...the whole survival community in action, the tension about resources, the community drawing together and making alliances, the "one of us is a criminal" thing. Wow, that had the potential of being a truly great show.

Then the smoke monster appeared and I lost every bit of interest and switched off.

Even stuff that's supernatural doesn't have to go all the way to "saving the world." What about the small potatoes supernatural problems?

I agree. Honestly, I just don't think modern film and TV writers are that skilled at character writing. Jump back even to the 90s and like the characters are so strong.

Now they're just poorly conceived and executed, and honestly I think most of their depth and potency arises from fandom building fanon around them.

Yeah, I know what you mean, OP. But I guess I should've known that nobody seems content to do a more straightforward adaptation of ACD Sherlock Holmes and its universe, there's always got to be a twist of some kind.

To each their own. It is the opposite for me. The supernatural element is what makes this look interesting to me. Fantasy is my genre. I'm generally mostly interested in things when they have some sort of magical/supernatural element to them that interests me. I don't want real world, I want at least some element of fantasy.

I was already interested in checking this out, as I like different takes on Sherlock Holmes, but finding out there's gonna be supernatural shenanigans just makes me even more interested. I love fantasy-elements and if that's combined with a historical setting I love it even more.

Looking forward to giving this show a go. :D

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Ditto, OP! Why is positively everything supernatural these days? Ugh.

This is the first I've heard of it but that is deeply disappointing, anon. There is so much they could have done with this too. Like, the irregulars deciding to try and solve crimes themselves while Holmes is 'dead' after the Falls.

I hadn't heard anything about this till now but I agree with you.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I hadn't heard of this until now, but honestly I'd be kind of okay with it? Holmes plus supernatural has been done before, I don't object to it, and given that this would otherwise be a lower-decks look at Victorian London, I might honestly be okay with a bit of fantasy to leaven what would likely otherwise be a bit on the grim side. I mean, I've watched and enjoyed both Ripper Street and From Hell, but a 'darker take' on Holmes-era London does tend to lean towards 'unrelentingly grim'.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-24 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
The trailer implies that Watson and Holmes are going to be the villains, taking credit for the Irregulars hard labour and I just...

Disemboweling a loved canon character and saying, Ta da! They're a bad guy now! isn't nearly as cool as some writers seem to think it is.

So maybe it's just the trailer, and maybe Watson and Holmes get unpacked and deconstructed in ways that have some actual bearing on the ACD stories.

I'm just... not filled with anticipation to find out.

I was pretty interested, sounded fun, but the creators have been doing that thing we're they're like "it's not like other Holmes, hopefully the purists won't be mad".

Holmes fans are pretty accepting, Holmes can be a dog, a mouse, in the future. They're also usually pretty happy to support and promote various adaptions.

So, it's kinda having that "it's not for you" feeling.

Then I read that Watson is going to be pretty shady and our first introduction to Holmes is going to be vomitting because he's out of his mind on drugs. Very original, guys.

They could do both, though? I mean - it's still (hopefully) gonna be clever kids surviving in Edwardian London, but they'll also be finding out about supernatural stuff.

Could be good, you never know!

The Irregulars are probably rarely explored because they don't play that much of a role in the canon. They're one of those Sherlock Holmes things that is bigger in the popular imagination than in the text.

I'm not surprised they took it this route tbh.
What did they canonically do? Trail individuals of interest and remember who and what they interacted with?

Just reminds me of ask reddit threads where people discover that private investigators spend most of their time inside their car doing eff all.

I was actually excited when I heard about this... perhaps less so when I found out it was a supernatural take. I don't mind the idea of a mash-up at all, I'm just... skeptical that it'll be done well, with special effects that aren't cheezy. But the trailer didn't really grab me and I'm not interested if Holmes and Watson are painted as the bad guys.

Oh.

It's on Netflix. No wonder I hadn't heard of it.

Agreed. Crossed that off my watchlist then. Pity.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-25 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Plus they are all MUCH too old! The Irregulars were children. That's what made them so usefully invisible.
