I hate it. There are a couple people who use it in Mandalorian fic. Every time I see Din Djarin/Grogu I have a brief moment of "GROSS!" before realizing they mean platonic.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-25 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I am so glad I’m not the only one. *shudder*

(Anonymous) 2021-03-25 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
You are right on the money with this one, OP. No two ways about it.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-25 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, that sounds annoying. Hasn’t X/Y always meant a romantic relationship while X&Y means platonic?

(Anonymous) 2021-03-26 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yes it has. That's where the term "slash" comes from - it's the slash between Kirk/Spock.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-25 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's kind of weird.

That would really irritate me too. I've run across it a few times, and it bugs me every time. If I'm looking for friendship fics, I'm looking for friendship fics. When I'm looking for shippy stuff, I want shippy stuff.

(not sarcasm) Finally a fandomsecret that will cause no wank because EVERYONE AGREES.

...I mean okay, clearly not everyone or this secret wouldn't be made, but ... basic fandom terminology/etiquette, you know?

(Anonymous) 2021-03-25 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It isn't, though! It's overwhelmingly common in English-language fic fandom descended from Trek slash, but other corners of fandom genuinely use X/Y for any character relationship or interaction, and it's always hella jarring crossing over from one sphere to another.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-25 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, that IS odd. I have literally never seen that in any of my fandoms, but then again, I can only read in English, so... yeah. I suppose that would provide an explanation as to how it might happen.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-25 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
They should adopt the Trek fandom style because it's clearly and objectively better

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-03-25 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to miss my own secret thread because I've been called into work boo! D:

Just wanted it to be noted that it's an English canon and almost entirely English fandom and the X&Y convention for platonic relationships has been in use for the three years prior to this. It's a new influx of fans who have started using X/Y for platonic stuff.

I have been in fandom as a whole for over 25 years now and I have literally never seen this anywhere in any fandom ever.

Off topic, but now I am shipping the words terminology and etiquette.
I am in a strange mood.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-25 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god that's irritating.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-25 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god this reminds me of someone I know who used portmanteaus for any type of character interaction even if said characters only interacted once. Granted it was in tumblr discussions, but it was still annoying as hell. Just type their names separately, god.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-25 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, yes, I can relate. My current OTP constantly gets tagged as both A/B and A&B. As in, the same fic will get both, but also a shippy fic will be tagged A&B or the other way around. I can sort of see where the confusion comes from for this pairing, with how the fandom views it. But still, the tags and how to use them are pretty clear.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-26 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, the double-tagging annoys me so much. Tags should be used for people to find (or avoid) fic they do (not) want to read. Too many people just use a "throw everything into a wall of tags longer than the fic itself" approach. Shockingly, people in a romantic or sexual relationship are also often friends at some point, so there's no need to tag fic with both. Even if you might miss out on a few readers who filter out one or the other tag...

(Anonymous) 2021-03-25 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm curious if this is because on the relationships box on the right hand screen of AO3 (at least in HP fandom) only pairings with the slash show up rather than the ampersand. So in order to get into the side box so people can "Find" their fic easily, people are putting in the slash rather than the ampersand without getting the slash is for romance and the ampersand is for platonic.

Maybe AO3 needs to make an info hover or a note when people are tagging? Or once again, people doing the "popular" tags like the one with 2000 tags.

All in all, yes, very annoying.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-25 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
They're annoying the people who want X/Y and missing out on readers who want X&Y. Way to shoot yourselves in both feet, writers.

Conventions, they are sometimes there for good reasons.

Yep, I've seen that and it's mad confusing.

Man, yes. I don't want to read & fic about my OTP or OT3, thank you very much.

Ooooof I'm sorry, OP that indeed sucks.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-26 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
That is wrong and they should feel bad.
