(not sarcasm) Finally a fandomsecret that will cause no wank because EVERYONE AGREES.

...I mean okay, clearly not everyone or this secret wouldn't be made, but ... basic fandom terminology/etiquette, you know?

It isn't, though! It's overwhelmingly common in English-language fic fandom descended from Trek slash, but other corners of fandom genuinely use X/Y for any character relationship or interaction, and it's always hella jarring crossing over from one sphere to another.

Ah, that IS odd. I have literally never seen that in any of my fandoms, but then again, I can only read in English, so... yeah. I suppose that would provide an explanation as to how it might happen.

I'm going to miss my own secret thread because I've been called into work boo! D:

Just wanted it to be noted that it's an English canon and almost entirely English fandom and the X&Y convention for platonic relationships has been in use for the three years prior to this. It's a new influx of fans who have started using X/Y for platonic stuff.

I wasn't saying you shouldn't be annoyed by the new trend! Especially if it's new people coming to the fandom and breaking with the established way of labeling things - I'm always in favor of people learning the labeling structure and terminology of an existing fandom space, not trying to impose their own.

I was just noting that it's not a universal fandom convention, even if it's pretty much ubiquitous in the LJ/DW/AO3 English sphere thanks to our fannish lineage.

I have been in fandom as a whole for over 25 years now and I have literally never seen this anywhere in any fandom ever.

I only read English-language fic, so I didn't realize other people tag their pairings differently. That's pretty cool actually. Interesting to see how fandom diverges like that.
