Pairing Tagging Question

(Anonymous) 2021-03-26 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello! So I am not very Ao3-savvy yet where tags are concerned, and would like some opinions on the following.

I'm writing and publishing a novel-length fic with a main pairing (A/B) and an implied pairing (C/D).

Although A/B is the focus, the platonic relationship between B & C is also central to the plot (it's a mentor and protégé relationship gone sour). B notices some signs between C and his sworn enemy/arch-rival D, and although he doesn't figure it out explicitly, it's supposed to be obvious to the reader that there's a romantic layer to the C/D relationship too. This appears in about 8 out of 20 chapters, but in a way that's not as essential for the plot as much as for the characterization.

Should I tag for C/D too? Would this be bad etiquette because C/D is implied and not as focal in the fic, even though the character of C is? Or should I ditch the tag? Am I overthinking this? Thanks so much in advance for any help!

If the C/D relationship isn't really pertinent to the story, as in if it's not more than a mention or visible in more than a handful of scenes, then personally I'd put it in the additional tags section so it's doesn't turn up in the tags for the shippers but also lets readers know it's in the fic if they don't care for it.

But at the same time that's just me, so go for what you feel is best tbh.

Thanks for the advice!

Just tag whatever will get you more clicks. Even if people hate it, it's not like anyone writes actual comments on fics anymore.

Question OP: Sorry to hear that that, in my corner of fandom I've had good experiences with comments, I write characters who are not exactly popular so the people who go specifically looking for it seem to appreciate that they found sth, so I don't want to annoy those who potentially *do* want to read what I write haha. But I get your complain. I try to leave the comments I'd like to receive :)

I want to see what other people say, but in the past I've either made a new tag called "Background Character C/D" or used the general "Minor or Background Relationship(s)" tag.

I would tag C and D as characters, tag Implied / Background relationship, and tag B & C platonic relationship

Thank you! This and the anon before you are extremely helpful!!

Another, Very Different Tagging Question:

(Anonymous) 2021-03-27 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
So sorry to gank your threat, OP, but I was about to make one very similar in spirit:

tw: non-con, xenophilia

I'm writing a fic where the MC has been raped and unknowingly impregnated by the alien. He's male, so no one even thinks he can carry anything viable. That's the key word - viable. I want him to have eggs come out of him that are non-viable, soft things that still hurt and he needs medical assistance to deal with it. HOW DO I TAG THIS????

Re: Another, Very Different Tagging Question:

I think you could still tag it with oviposition (if the scene includes it). I think that generally covers the fact of eggs/egg laying. There's also egg laying. Maybe non-live birth? Or non hatching? You could even tag "soft eggs" (lmao wtf as a tag but hey). "Non-viable eggs". Oviposition will definitely get you in the running for that kind of fic.

So some tags you might want:
Non-con, xenophilia, aliens, ovipostion, egg laying, medical procedures (or medical kink if that's part of it), and some of the stuff I named up earlier? Hope it helps!
