Hardy would be phenomenal as an English literary spy, just not James Bond. He would make an amazing Tommy Hambledon (at least in the post-WW2 books). Seriously, he's perfect for the part. He's just very imperturbable and quizzical and odd in a totally low-key way and just gives you the sense of constantly taking this bemused pleasure at every weird thing that happens. I know no one else but me has read the Hambledon books but I have to mention it because Hardy is Hambledon to me now.

But that's not Bond. Bond is a bully and a sadist with a cold veneer of charm laid over the top. That's not Hardy.
