I've read two volumes of the manga, and I agree.

In third grade my parents gave me the choice to pick one comic to read at a time, so I dropped this in favor of Rayearth. I finally finished the series in college.

Child me made the right call.

I agree. I mean, I do like the manga and I respect that we wouldn’t have the anime without it, but there’s a reason I don’t own it. If I had to pick between the manga or the ‘90s anime, I’d pick the ‘90s anime hands down. I liked all the extra filler bits where the girls just hung out together and I really enjoyed how some of the villains were redeemed (yeah, the Amazon Trio were kinda sketch, but the episode where they sacrifice themselves to repair Usagi’s dream mirror made me cry the ugliest tears). I don’t remember any of the villains getting redeemed in the manga.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t looking forward to the Eternal movies though. I didn’t like the first two seasons of Crystal, but I did enjoy the third one because the animation was cuter IMO. I also have a soft spot for Chibiusa/Helios because they were my first ship ever way before I even knew what shipping was, so I’m looking forward to that arc.

What I remember of villains in the manga was a lot of them getting introduced and then swiftly killed off, at times seemingly in the same chapter. It was all so rushed and confusing.

Oh yeah, now I remember. The villains getting quickly killed off was annoying. My favorite villains in the anime were the Witches 5 and Eudial and Mimete each got a couple of episodes before they bit the dust (I think the other girls were defeated in their first episodes). I was super disappointed when I read the manga and they all just showed up to get killed off.

+1000. It's funny how I have so many fond memories of the anime, having been super into the fandom until my early teens but the manga and the new anime do absolutely NOTHING for me. There's just so many different things, IMO all of them for the worse. I love Chibiusa and I loved Super S the most (and it felt the least butchered IMO) so maybe... maybe.

The manga is terrible. It still blows my mind after all these years that it inspired one of the most successful and influential anime of all time.

Yeah, I agree. It's pretty rushed Imo. one of the good things it had is that it developed more the relationship between Mamoru and Usagi, but honestly I vastly prefer the anime for developing the girls friendship and the characters more.

This is precisely one of my main reasons for HATING it? I never liked Mamoru in the slightest and I felt so redeemed by the brief Seiya/Usagi arc. I still love them, sigh. Sad, because some Mamoru/Usagi fans are AGGRESSIVE about it because "the story is supposed to be about them!" and blah but Seiya/Usagi is like... a canon OC/MC fanfic, and I love it for what it is.

lol You do you, anon. I'm indiferent to Mamo/Usa and Mamoru in general but I have heard of the aggressive MamoUsa fans which suck for other pair shippers. But if you enjoy SeiyaUsa then enjoy it!

I vastly prefer the old animebecause of the gay ships. The manga is very aggressively het in comparison (especially when it comes to Kunzite and Zoisite).

(Anonymous) 2021-04-01 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of it is weird het too. Maybe I'm just not that into reincarnation romance, lovers' suicide, and destined love. Also I appreciate what Naoko was doing with the Black Lady plot line but did she have to actually make out with her dad??

There are some parts of the manga that I prefer over the anime, especially the series ending, but even with those, I like the concept more than the execution. The best version of Sailor Moon for me is a nonexistent story that's like 90% the first anime and 10% the manga.
