Is this about shipping? I can think of other kinds of subtext I personally could apply this complaint to, but not any I’ve seen anyone besides me complain about.

I think it depends on what the creator is trying to do (like poetry that is all subtext is fun imo), but it can be very annoying.

My "favorite" is when people make up subtext because they want it to be there and then call their made up subtext "canon." And get mad when people don't agree that it's canon.

I love subtext as in "there's enough content here to assume stuff" but yeah, if there's nothing canon about it... maybe it's not subtext, just a delusion.

Making HC’s off of subtext and playing around with that is fun, but it’s not a substitute for canon.

tbh most of the time when i see ppl talking about subtext there’s nothing there, it’s just wishful thinking.
