I read this book in 11th or 12th grade with personal interest because I was in the only English section in my year that didn't read it. 100% overhyped. I'm over 20 years older now and even more annoyed that this literal child was set free in a city to do whatever he wanted. Different times, maybe, but Holden really is just a little shit.

Okay, I don't get it, isn't he 16? Is it really unbelievable that he could go AWOL in the city for a bit? It's been ages since I read this but doesn't this book have one of those A Craaaaazy Night plots? Why is this of all things such a sticking point for you AND the OP?

I mean, you might not like Holden, but he's 16 in the late 1940s. 17 year olds had just been engaged in WW2.

Wait, wait, wait—which is it? Because if he's a literal child, then he is not responsible for his behavior, and thus cannot be a little shit.

Excuse me? Amyone under 18 cannot be responsible for their own behaviour? What utter tosh.

JFC you're pathetic.
