I actually think this is pretty common with abused and neglected kids who had different areas of neglect and abuse. for what it's worth, i actually think mental institutions and boarding schools at the time were v e r y unhelpful to the point of regression for emotional self-sufficiency. like yes, you'd think maybe his realizations would afford him psychological direction, but....that's the opposite of what '50s boarding schools do imo.
