In real life a person is either extraordinarily beautiful, smart or talented, or they don't get away with this kind of behavior. The character is an anti-Sue.

It's a sitcom

Sometimes unrealistic things happen

The only time I've ever had an issue with April is how she keeps mistreating Ann. At first, it was understandable; Ann did spontaneously kiss her old ex (Andy) even though Ann (and also Andy) had a thing for each other. And because April was like, what, 19, so it felt in-character and appropriate for her to react in such a childish manner by being constantly petty towards Ann.

Otherwise, the fact that April kept singling out Ann whenever she insulted/picked on people way more than she did to others even WAY late into the tail end of the series - long after she's married Andy and Ann moved on with her own life - came across as amazingly petty. After a certain point, it's just comes across as mean-spirited.

April is funny and hot imo

I never cared for her character, either.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-02 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't like her either. She is one of those people who clearly thinks she's cooler and smarter than other people because she's honest (aka mean), and because she likes most things ironically (unlike the sheeple masses who are dumb enough to just uncritically enjoy stuff, omg so lame).

If she were fifteen in the show I'd just shrug and figure she was going through that phase. But she's old enough that I just find her whole persona tiresome.

Yes, good breakdown.

April is like an "edgy teen"...but she's not a teen, so she's just an asshole.

To people ITT

do you watch Road Runner cartoons and complain that physics doesn't really work that way

Weird comment considering only one person ITT is criticizing the character based on realism. Even weirder comment considering comparing Parks & Rec to a Saturday morning cartoon is apples to oranges.

Sitcoms and Saturday morning cartoons are different in many ways, but they both have genre conventions that differ in clear ways from reality. That doesn't mean that you have to like Road Runner cartoons, but criticizing them for not being realistic is a category error. It's not what the cartoon is about.

NA

I've never complained about the physics in Roadrunner cartoons, but even though I love the movie Speed, when the bus jumps that section, I always think, "Yeah, physics doesn't work that way," and when I watch Live Free or Die Hard and the fighter jet shows up, I think, "No, you can't do that with an F-35." I'm pretty good at suspension of disbelief (action movies are my favorite genre), but sometimes it is really difficult to accept something so counter to my knowledge, even knowing the fictional universe rules are different from the real world.

What's your argument here? People can't dislike fictional characters because they're fictional?

Can you walk me through your logic?

Re: To people ITT

(Anonymous) 2021-04-02 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
My argument is that people should recognize that characters in sitcoms are not people in real life. Their personality traits are magnified and heightened, and the society they inhabit is also significantly different and will often not react to them in ways that we would expect our world to react, as part of the broader purposes of comedy

This is going to blow your mind, but...it's 100% possible to know all of those things and STILL not like a character. Because people insist on this weird phenomenon called "having personal preferences".

Sure. I don't think I or anyone else has said at any point that anyone shouldn't dislike a character, so I don't know where that's coming from.

i agree with your judgment on her, but i like how she fits into the show anyway. I actually think most of the characters are mean, and I appreciate her meanness more than the others.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-02 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
The characters are extremely mean and the show was at its best before they leaned into the all-touching all-learning nicecore ethos of later seasons (but after the first season or so where they were *just* mean)

(Anonymous) 2021-04-03 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
honestly, yeah. i dislike all of the characters on this show at some point but as someone who struggled to find work for a while it was especially frustrating and disheartening seeing her coast up the ladder.
