*thinking about all the Dean-Winchester-is-Eldest-Daughter-coded posts on my dash lately*

(Anonymous) 2021-04-01 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Would you still object to this if they didn't use the word "coded"

(Anonymous) 2021-04-01 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

What do you mean?? If Dean Winchester was literally an eldest daughter?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-01 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
If somebody talked about how Dean Winchester had many traits societally associated with oldest daughters and how that resonated with them.

Oh, gotcha. I think that would make more sense than using the term coded, as coded kind of implies that was the intent in his character, which is...very, very questionable.

I mean I don't think that Kripke was AWARE that that's what he was doing, but I don't think it's ridiculous that that's how fans describe it, because it's a lot easier than saying 'Dean Winchester shares many traits associated with elder daughter-hood'. From the age of FOUR his life revolved around taking care of a younger sibling, which is not normally a job that gets pushed onto eldest sons, whereas an eldest daughter often has to be an additional caretaker, so even though the writers would never describe him that way, and he wouldn't describe himself that way, nor do I think the association would ever occur to John while putting that job on his shoulders... he's going to wind up with some of the same baggage, because 'having to become a de facto parent instead of having a childhood' baggage is gender neutral.

I don't think it's that unusual given there's no sister. Like you say, eldest sons get parentified/ pushed into the caring role, too, particularly if there are no girls (or aunts) to put in that role.

Oh my god, those are always terrible.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-02 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
That's back again? I remember when that was around in like, Season 2.

Tied for the worst posts ever with that "Kylo Ren is queer-coded and if you're gay and hate him it's because you've got internalized homophobia' tweet

asd;fjsd;k WHAT? I haven't seen any of those, but that sounds way worse actually!

.....that's.....have these people never met an oldest sibling with neglectful parents. how is he female-coded otherwise? Which happens to male children with shitty parents all the time? Which happened to male children with just busy parents in media incessantly in the 90s.

I at least see where the Sam is female/queer-coded come from.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-02 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
It probably comes from people conflating religious conservatives with large families foisting child-rearing responsibilities off on their elder daughters with the more general parentification of eldest children in neglectful homes or families dealing with crisis or poverty.

I could see the Winchesters reminding people of cults, because I think circumstances did instill cult-like dynamics and there's a lot of religious imagery, but there's so many male-coded things happening with Dean, that I do think this is a bit of wishful-thinking.

I'm sorry what?!

As an eldest daughter, imma have to disagree with that line of thought. As someone mentioned above, that's far more in line with ANY child who has had to take on the responsibility of parenting not only themselves but a younger sibling, in addition to overcompensating gender roles (Dean's gotta be "man's man" like his daddy, because his father is the "protector" and "warrior", strong and etc, I mean half of this show is just Dean being a little boy whose father never hugged him, acknowledged him, and expressed/communicated his love in a healthy way).
