Re: What book, movie, show, band, franchise, fandom, et cetera changed your life for the better?

Marion Zimmer Bradley's books (particularly The Forbidden Tower and The Mists of Avalon) were pretty life-changing. I grew up in a super conservative Christian household, and I'm pretty sure my mom would not have bought me "oh look a retelling of the legend of King Arthur from the perspective of the women" if she had any idea. I mean I'm talking about someone who was reading books about how D&D was going to get your kids to summon demons who would possess them, and she buys me that? Hooooboy.

But since I grew up in that kind of household (and already knew a lot of what I was being told was BS, since I already played D&D and read comic books and knew what Mom's books said were just straight up lies), having things like polyamory and bisexuality and paganism portrayed as something other than literal devil worship was really useful in starting to navigate a whole lot of things I then encountered in my adult life. Including eventually being engaged to a polyamorous AFAB pagan. I'm not sure that would've worked out too well if I hadn't gotten more familiar with these topics in my late teens before I just wandered out into the world and encountered them.

...It sucks that MZB apparently turned out to be terrible, but her books meant a lot to me and helped me figure some stuff out before I had to figure it out. I kinda understand how Harry Potter fans have been feeling the last couple years. :/
