Anne of Green Gables taught me it was okay to be different and to enjoy reading and be smart and not fit in as a girl.

Star Wars and Harry Potter were my early fandoms and gave me a safe space during difficult times.

Legend of The Seeker was probably the first fandom where finally I started to admit to myself my bisexuality.

Tolkien gave me a sense of hope and helped me a lot with my depression. And the fandom helped me a lot too with motivation, with feeling better about myself, just finding a place I fit in and felt at home in.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has helped with my depression a lot this month. It's just awesome all around and I'm so thankful to have gotten a chance to experience it. I'm also grateful to have something, anything, to look forward to in the next few years via the upcoming sequel.

Mashups of popular songs have been good for my health too, both mentally and physically as I listen to them working out - getting the best of both worlds is always a treat. I love when DJs mix Depeche Mode with pretty much any other band.

Do you mind sharing your fab mashups? I love DM.

Don't know if this really counts, but there have been a few lines in fics which have been like somebody has looked directly into my head. Those have been pretty life changing.

The Witches books from Discworld have shaped me a lot too.

The Mountain Goats. Several of those songs have been a great help in my more depressed and suicidal periods.

Marion Zimmer Bradley's books (particularly The Forbidden Tower and The Mists of Avalon) were pretty life-changing. I grew up in a super conservative Christian household, and I'm pretty sure my mom would not have bought me "oh look a retelling of the legend of King Arthur from the perspective of the women" if she had any idea. I mean I'm talking about someone who was reading books about how D&D was going to get your kids to summon demons who would possess them, and she buys me that? Hooooboy.

But since I grew up in that kind of household (and already knew a lot of what I was being told was BS, since I already played D&D and read comic books and knew what Mom's books said were just straight up lies), having things like polyamory and bisexuality and paganism portrayed as something other than literal devil worship was really useful in starting to navigate a whole lot of things I then encountered in my adult life. Including eventually being engaged to a polyamorous AFAB pagan. I'm not sure that would've worked out too well if I hadn't gotten more familiar with these topics in my late teens before I just wandered out into the world and encountered them.

...It sucks that MZB apparently turned out to be terrible, but her books meant a lot to me and helped me figure some stuff out before I had to figure it out. I kinda understand how Harry Potter fans have been feeling the last couple years. :/

Xenosaga, of all things, taught me to not be afraid of unpleasant truths and feelings.

Tolkien's Middle-earth books. They gave me somewhere to go when I really needed it. They still do tbh.

The Untamed was not only one of the most enjoyable shows I've seen in years, it was my gateway to other Chinese dramas. They've been a godsend during the pandemic.

Lynda Barry’s comics and writings. Sometimes she just hits a bullseye for me on certain types of feelings that I hadn’t figured out how to express, especially when she works through anxiety about creating or about identity. It makes me feel a little more able to explain myself with a little less apology.

Also the indie game series, the Blackwell series, by Wadjet Eye - mostly because it’s very set in NY with clear references to different non-fictional places. Midway through the series I ended up living in NY briefly, and it prompted me to go visit places I probably wouldn’t have thought to go to otherwise. A couple places left me with very good memories!

Kae Tempest, "Let them Eat Chaos" has some of the best description of intrusive traumatic thoughts I've ever heard.

Neil Gaiman, "Sandman" A fucking brilliant comic run that spoiled me on mainstream supehero comics. Some of the first friendly LGBTQ representation I encountered (and for context, both DC and Marvel had entire imprints dedicated to keeping the gay away from their mainstream lines). Inspired my goth phase.

"Torch Song Trilogy," My not-yet-out gay roommate was obsessed with it. A bit biphobic but Firestein's "respect" monologue in Act III is still a classic.

"Star Trek," 40-odd years and still going to watch every episode.

The kids' (would be YA now igss but that didn't exist then) book "The Drowning of Stephen Jones" made me realize I wasn't straight.

Tori Amos made me realize I wasn't broken from my sexual abuse.

Star Wars gave me great friends when I desperately needed them (as would Stargate later down the line).

Guillermo Del Toro's work wound up PROFOUNDLY bettering my life.

David Bowie, huge impact. Also Queen, Jim Steinman, The Magnetic Fields, Cole Porter, and Gilbert and Sullivan. Yeah it... it got a little eclectic there.

The MCU, in a roundabout way, gave me one of my best friends, which is funny because it's not actually something either of us is super big into, it was just the point of introduction from which we spent the next couple of years throwing 'I can't believe you also like (X)' at each other over... everything.

Books: Good Omens, The Left Hand of Darkness, Watership Down, The Picture of Dorian Gray, various Stephen King works, the Sherlock Holmes canon, PG Wodehouse, Ray Bradbury, Poe...

And... also Mystery Science Theater 3000 and D&D were enormous friendship-cementing things.
