Same for Roman Polanksi. Really, just being male in public basically guarantees defenders no matter what transgressions they've done.

Polanski and Allen probably have defenders in large part because they are both acclaimed directors who have made films considered by many among the best of all time.

I don't think that, in any way, justifies defending them. I am in no way saying that the quality of their films should have any bearing on their wrongdoing. But I also don't think it's accurate to reduce the situation to say that people are defending Polanski and Allen simply because they are men.

I think Hollywood lets men get away with *a lot* more but Allen and Polanski are bad examples.

They're geniuses at what they do for a job (well, Woody used to be...) and Polanski has an incredibly sympathetic backstory (for starters, his pregnant wife was horrifically murdered by an insane cult in their own home, for being in the wrong place at the wrong time). It's a lot harder to call someone out when they've created genuine cultural touchstones, even if they're obviously guilty.


Armie Hammer is only mediocre. He does good work, but it'll never change anyone's life. He's like a picture of a handsome model who came with the photo frame you bought. Before the sex cannibal stories came out, people didn't think he was interesting at all, not really. But he is very classically handsome and rich, and that seems to be enough for a lot of people.

Exactly! No-one is rushing to defend Amber Heard, She's fighting for her reputation and no-one cares. No-one helped Asia Argento, she had to go into hiding. Emma Roberts was publicly eviscerated! She doesn't have a career anymore, and she was only defending herself against a man who surprise surprise still has a flourishing career. Women are thrown to the wolves at even the hint of made-up charges. Men are usually protected.

Three highly contentious examples is all you could come up with to try and make a point? Don't pretend there isn't a broader trend of men failing upwards, for fuck's sake. Evan Peters also dropped any charges against Emma Roberts, which tends to exonerate anyone. See: Josh Brolin doing just fucking fine in his career after Diane Lane dropped the domestic abuse charges.

I didn't hear about the Josh Brolin accusation, but I totally believe he could beat a woman and still be a star of a marvel movie, because Disney doesn't care.

DA - Tossing Terrence Howard's name on the pile. He's been accused of abuse by just about every ex he's got, and he's fucking admitted to hitting at least one of them. But somehow his career is still doing just fine.

This always feels like a really tricky argument to me because, like, surely the endgame we want here is not that women should be allowed to get away with abuse too?

When a woman commit abuse against a man I'd be happy to see her face the consequences, but that's so rare an situation it doesn't really register for me. What I'm worried about now is that when a woman is simply accused of abusing a man her life is basically over, her career is over while a man can openly abuse a woman, and not only is he defended to the hilt and faces no punishment, we're starting to see cases now where the man will turn it around and accuse her of being abusive. We're in a world today when a man can abuse a woman then be defended and protected and then ruin her life by making an accusation that everyone rushes to believe.

Well, it seems to me that the specific thing that we should be seeking out here is trying to build a world that takes abuse seriously, and to have consequences for men who are abusers. We shouldn't be trying to get rid of consequences for women who are abusive; we should be trying to have consequences for men who abuse. The problem is the part where men face no consequences, and changing that is really what the goal should be.

I also want to say that it seems very very likely that Amber Heard specifically was abusive (it seems overwhelmingly likely that Johnny Depp was also abusive; it seems like both parties were abusive and fucked up) and I don't think any good end is served by doing anything other than using our best, most mature judgment in all situations across the board without favor to anyone.

funny that you mention anber heard again because isn't that the perfect example? both are abusive but johnny depp's career hasn't been impacted (even though the more well known narrative was that he was the abuser)

He got fired from both the Pirates of the Caribbean and Fantastic Beasts franchises. His career absolutely has been impacted in a huge way.

When was Emma Roberts eviscerated? I was shocked by your claim, thinking she'd been recently cancelled, and then I looked her up and found nothing in recent media suggesting her fame is affected. So I looked up the incident... and it happened in 2013. She definitely had a career after this. Most of the stuff that made her a household name came after 2013.

Well, a lot of actors have had good experiences with Woody Allen, who's supposed to be nice on set and also gets them Oscars.

I don't like Woody Allen (honestly, getting with his long-term partner's adopted daughter (yuck) put me off long ago before the other allegations, but aren't most of his defenders actors and other film people?

A lot of Armie Hammer's defenders are thirsty fans.

I think Hammer is in trouble because he's only kinda attractive and never got "voice of a generation" fame in the same way as Allen, Depp, or Spacey.

Also he apparently has a history of harassing media journalists, the same people who would be running the puff pieces about how Hammer is just a misunderstood person who went crazy by from the pressures of filming and is trying to put his life together.

Louis CK still has defenders, so that's not it. Ultimately, people really don't think the state where a) someone in power can abuse those with less, b) men can abuse women, and c) people feel entitled to the labor of others and so are willing to excuse the harm caused by that labor, should be changed.

Not just conventionally attractive, but also rich, famous, white and male. You have to pretty seriously fuck up to ruin things if you're in all of those categories.

(Robert Downey Jr managed it with drugs, and it's not that I begrudge him a comeback, but it wouldn't have happened for a woman or a black guy.)
