I know nothing about this, but sign me up for any villain/heroine or hero ship.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-06 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this the one where the villain is called the darkling or something cuz there's about a 0% chance I'm gonna be able to take that seriously

(Anonymous) 2021-04-06 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
That's his title in the books (and IMO, it works), but I don't think they're doing that in the adaptation.

Small spoilers for someone just at the very beginning of this book.

Yes, he's called the Darkling. I think it means he's a summoner of things dark (I'm in the first few chapters). He's also not currently the villain?

And I honestly thought they were endgame. Kind of like how, in Hunger Games, they set up Katniss and Gale in the first chapter, but she actually belonged with Peeta.

I've also been reading a lot of books with the Fae/magical creatures in them and the main female character ends up with the "dark" option who will let her explore her full and dangerous powers. So I guess that's what I thought would go on here. I guess we'll see?

I thought to myself "He looks a bit like Tom Ellis," and now I can't unsee it.

That's Ben "Black Eyes, Like a Doll's Eyes" Barnes. But really, his eyes are so creepily dark.

AYART

Haha, I love a good Jaws reference. You know who else has weirdly dark eyes? Stephen Colbert.

DA

Ahem, they are pools of darkness that drag you in and drown you, that's Ben "Black Eyes, Like Nightfall, like the Abyss you'll willing jump into, like pools of darkness you'll be list in forever, Dark Eyes of Desire" Barnes.

Can't have any of that demon eyes nonsense lol

To me, he looks like someone took a picture of Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange and slapped one of those de-aging filters on it.

That was also my first thought on seeing this secret.

After I picked my tongue up off the floor, I couldn't open a Netflix tab fast enough.

I didn't know about this but

1. I am ALWAYS here for Ben Barnes
2. As a villain too?! Christmas cane early!!!
3. Omg is this a hero/villain ship?! My dreams are slowly coming true
4. Is the lead a WoC?! Whaaat truly, my dreams are coming true.
5. UGH BEN BARNES. I'M MELTING. I'M SO HAPPY. LOL

I wonder if the show is going to do anything extra to try and prop the 'normal' love intrest up so that Ben Barnes seems less appealing because hoo boy, the normal guy doesn't get many positive comments in book reviews.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-07 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Mal is kind of underwhelming. I don't like love triangles to begin with and while he's heroic, he doesn't seem very interesting? I also hated the fact that most of the conflict between them was based on irrational jealousy. Like okay, you treat your friend like she's your little sister most of your lives, you fuck other girls because you're hot, but the second she's got other romantic prospects you act like an asshat and give her the cold shoulder. Sorry, not interested.

I saw the trailer and proceeded onto goodreads to look at the reviews for each book and how they end. There's only one way I'd want this show to end and since all YA is cowardly when it comes to these triangles... well, needless to say i didn't buy the books.

I should have known this was going to get an adaptation. This series still makes me so angry even though I read these books years ago lol.

Ben Barnes or not I’m gonna give this a hard pass. And also Ben Barnes was not the first person I thought of for the darkling, but he works.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-07 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ooo who did you have in mind and why does this book/show make you angry?

Never heard if the books but even before reading the comics it looks like the typical teen/YA dark fae/urban fantasy romance...i won't say trash, but it's definitely giving me B movie quality source material, yeah?

The female lead is soundly punished for wanting to develop or explore her natural powers. Her "wholesome" love interest also constantly slut shames her and puts her down, all while sleeping around himself (but he's a guy so it's ok). The villain who actually seems to understand her and respect her power (at the beginning at least), is clearly considered by the author to be a terrible choice for the heroine, and she's punished for being attracted to him.

I shipped them like crazy in the first book.

Later not so much, but the relationship between them was still interesting to me. I hope the show follows the book in this regard.
