Do you mean where they've tagged all the individual pairings, but not the OT3 itself? Because otherwise, couldn't you just exclude anything tagged B/C?

(I've always been confused by people who like OT3s but only two legs of the triangle. I know it's a whole type of polyamorous relationship, but I just find it weird to like an OT3 when you actively hate one side of the trio together)

I dunno, I get it-- it's a whole different dynamic when it's an ot3. Like... I've got an A/B/C I'll read where I'm ONLY in it for B/C and don't think A/B or A/C work-- BUT, A/B/C still does, because it balances out differently. Another where A/B and B/C are both great in different ways, and A/B/C has potential to me, but A/C has nothing without B. It works for me to see them interact as two sides of a triad, but without their individual relationships with B, nothing would bring them together in the first place.

I like B/C together but only as part of an OT3. They can even have scenes with just B/C in an OT3 fic and I enjoy them. But a fic with just them and no A does nothing for me.

So the issue is excluding all the fics tagged B/C *except* the ones that are A/B/C? Ao3 doesn't have a function to go 'exclude B/C unless also tagged A/B/C', like that?

In that case, couldn't you just search for A/B/C? You won't get B/C on its own unless you're specifically searching for it separately, so the A/B/C tag should ensure that if it shows up, it's as part of the OT3.

Or, if the issue is that you're finding A/B/C tagged fics that only actually feature B and C in them, with A only mentioned, you could try searched 'A/B/C' with 'Character A' in the character tags? That one's not foolproof, though, I realise that, since a lot of people tag characters who don't actually appear if they consider them part of the main pairing or an important topic of conversation.

I agree, but for a slightly different reason. I'm not really into OT3s, so if fics have the separate pairings tagged and I look for my OTP, they show up too. It's not a huge problem, but it is annoying.

THIS.

Same!

AxB is the fandom juggernaut pairing, I love BxC and a full third of BxC is AxBxC.

I wouldn't mind it if BxC had a bunch of scenes together or they were together first and added A. But its usually not that! Don't tag a pairing unless you'd think someone looking for that pairing would like your fic pls.

This. My fandom has an OT3 OT4 thing going on and I'Ve been burned so many times, by them tagging ships individually, but obviously they are not capable of polyships either, so the fic always ends up focusing on a duo and clogs up the ship tags.
