It's very bad costuming.

Even in coal towns they'd still be wearing corsets and bustles. And the collars aren't high enough. And as the seasons go on it looks like it gets worse. And the men's pants. -shudders- Ohkay, yeah let's put them in a modern flat font corduroy and call it good.

Bad costuming though tends to be on the nose for these types of productions.
