It really seems like this has nothing to do with him coming out and you just don't like the character? Which is fair enough, it just made me laugh

Aw, I hope he can stick around ‘cause I love Vanya. The focus on Vanya is one of the reasons I prefer the shows over the comics.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-08 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you like about Vanya?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-08 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda like that she’s an unwilling instigator of doom, if that makes any sense. She’s not a bad person, but due to people manipulating her and other circumstances out of her control, she’s done bad things. She’s tremendously powerful, but also very vulnerable. She’s just one of those characters that I really feel for and hope things work out for her in the end.

Super controversial, but I think they should recast the part.

I mean... we've all pretty much agreed that trans roles should only be played by trans people so the same should be true of cisgender parts.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure how they'd do that without it looking like Elliot was being punished with losing his job for coming out as trans. I think the "trans roles should only be played by trans people" has more to do with there being so FEW trans roles and trans actors not having very many opportunities in general, where cis actors and cis parts are pretty much the norm.

Plus I can't think of anything about Vanya in the comics that would preclude the show from making changes with regards to gender or presentation-- they've already made a ton of changes to the characters for the show and all of them have been improvements in service of the story they're telling, and have kept true to the spirit of the original. It's honestly the best adaptation of a comic book I think I've ever seen.

I think it's complicated, should he lose his job? No, but the character is female, should he now essentially drag up to play a woman or should they have the character come out as trans in order to accommodate the actor? Maybe?

There's no real easy answer

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Hopefully these are all discussions Elliot has had/is having with the creative team on The Umbrella Academy, and they come to a solution that works for both the actor and the character. As a fan I'd rather they not change actors, but as long as all parties involved are satisfied and the result is a good show, I trust their judgement on the issue.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I can't imagine it'd be very healthy for him mentally to continue to play a woman.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's a decision that only he can make.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Elliot should be free to take on male roles and trans male roles, not sure he should be taking on female roles.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure why he shouldn't, *if* he chose to do so and all parties agreed he fit the part.

Consdering that they have all ended up in an alternative timeline, I figure they will just say Vanya is male in this new timeline.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
That, and cis people get absurd amounts of critical attention and awards for playing playing trans people.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you've just demonstrated that you don't understand why trans roles should only be played by trans people.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
SA

No, I'm agreeing that trans roles should be played by trans actors. I do not, however, agree that "so the same should be true of cisgender parts." Vanya may be a cis character for all that we know (comics never address it), but I see absolutely no reason the part couldn't be played by a trans actor if the actor is comfortable doing so.

+1, Eliot should continue playing Vanya if he wants. Trans characters being played by trans actors is a different argument entirely, just like any minority/persecuted group getting to make their own stories.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Can't say I disagree, though I'd prefer storylines that were more about Vanya *and her family* rather than Vanya alone. I know that intentionally excluded outsider is kind of her ~thing~ in the show, and she hasn't had much to do in the comics since the end of Apocalypse Suite, but my favorite parts of both the show and the comics are when the siblings get to explore the sibling relationships and the fallout of how they were raised.

Hoping the character doesn't spend 90% of Season 3 having absolutely nothing to do with her siblings.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Those are my favorite parts too. I liked season two more than season one because we got to see the siblings bond in different ways. Vanya, Allison, and Klaus dancing in the beauty parlor was really cute and Diego realizing he was talking to Ben was so sweet. All of them working together at the end was pretty cool too.

+1

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't watched Umbrella Academy that much, but I am kinda curious how they're going to reconcile the actor's transition with the character and all that.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a certain degree of nonbinary erasure going on in these comments, along with the lack of awareness that Paige isn't the first nonbinary person to come out while attached to a cis (so far) role, or the only trans person to play a cis role. (Although he was talking about Vanya's costuming and presentation from the start, which prompted a lot of "isn't that interesting" in my brain.)

But I'm trying to cut back on "give a fuck about randos think about trans people" haterade this week.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, they're non-binary? I thought Paige came out as a transman?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)

During our interviews, Page will repeatedly refer to himself as a “transgender guy.” He also calls himself nonbinary and queer, but for him, transmasculinity is at the center of the conversation right now. “It’s a complicated journey,” he says, “and an ongoing process.”
