Super controversial, but I think they should recast the part.

I mean... we've all pretty much agreed that trans roles should only be played by trans people so the same should be true of cisgender parts.

Not sure how they'd do that without it looking like Elliot was being punished with losing his job for coming out as trans. I think the "trans roles should only be played by trans people" has more to do with there being so FEW trans roles and trans actors not having very many opportunities in general, where cis actors and cis parts are pretty much the norm.

Plus I can't think of anything about Vanya in the comics that would preclude the show from making changes with regards to gender or presentation-- they've already made a ton of changes to the characters for the show and all of them have been improvements in service of the story they're telling, and have kept true to the spirit of the original. It's honestly the best adaptation of a comic book I think I've ever seen.

DA

I think it's complicated, should he lose his job? No, but the character is female, should he now essentially drag up to play a woman or should they have the character come out as trans in order to accommodate the actor? Maybe?

There's no real easy answer

Hopefully these are all discussions Elliot has had/is having with the creative team on The Umbrella Academy, and they come to a solution that works for both the actor and the character. As a fan I'd rather they not change actors, but as long as all parties involved are satisfied and the result is a good show, I trust their judgement on the issue.

I can't imagine it'd be very healthy for him mentally to continue to play a woman.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's a decision that only he can make.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Elliot should be free to take on male roles and trans male roles, not sure he should be taking on female roles.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure why he shouldn't, *if* he chose to do so and all parties agreed he fit the part.

NAYT

Isn't that the same argument that's been used to justify cis casting in trans roles?

I believe the character is going to be trans in S3 so it's sort of a non-issue going forward but I don't think having a male actor playing a woman would work (in this scenario)

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Technically, he'd be taking a role away from a woman.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Consdering that they have all ended up in an alternative timeline, I figure they will just say Vanya is male in this new timeline.

That, and cis people get absurd amounts of critical attention and awards for playing playing trans people.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you've just demonstrated that you don't understand why trans roles should only be played by trans people.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
SA

No, I'm agreeing that trans roles should be played by trans actors. I do not, however, agree that "so the same should be true of cisgender parts." Vanya may be a cis character for all that we know (comics never address it), but I see absolutely no reason the part couldn't be played by a trans actor if the actor is comfortable doing so.

I wanted to post in disagreement with AYRT, but I don't have the energy tonight to be properly articulate on this subject.

Izzard is also nonbinary, and is wrapping up production on a show where he (Izzard just clarified that contextual pronouns work) is in "boy mode."

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
And Hewson also has been taking female roles. (Although I strongly suspect that Santa Clarita Diet was building up to a coming out episode for Abby. They kind of laid down the bones of an adolescent love triangle in Season 3.)

Also Ezra Miller and Ruby Rose.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Stupid question, is non-binary different to trans?

I ask because I wasn't really aware Ezra Miller & Ruby Rose identified as non-binary, I just thought they were into 'gender as role play' (sorry, I don't what the term would be, I would have said transvestism but that seems wrong).

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Izzard came out as a transwoman post-production?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)

“As I’m playing a male role, I suggested people should go back to calling me he and him for this, and what the world seems to have said to me is you can change your pronouns but you can’t use he and him as well. You’ve just got to be she and her from now on because we’ve only got so much time on our hands, thank you very much.” How does she feel about that? She beams. “Great. I’ve been promoted to she, and it’s a great honour.”

(Anonymous) 2021-04-09 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
+1, Eliot should continue playing Vanya if he wants. Trans characters being played by trans actors is a different argument entirely, just like any minority/persecuted group getting to make their own stories.
