What are some of your favorite dub overs?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-08 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by Secret #7 today.
Any language and can be related to anime or anything else with a dub.

As far as anime, I've always had a huge weakness for the Gurren Lagann dub. The, uh, first one? Apparently there are two, but I've only seen the one with Kyle Hebert and Yuri Lowenthal. I also really enjoyed the Haruhi Suzumiya, Death Note, and Ga-Rei: Zero dub.

For video games, Devil May Cry! It's clear how much the cast is enjoying themselves. Later Final Fantasy games, starting with XII -- worldbuilding through accents! Persona 5 had excellent voice work but a supbar localization (remember when Ann shouted, "You were doing things that you kept in secret from others!" good lord) so it's an honorable mention at best.

uhhh I will never watch a live action dub so I can't really say there

Cromartie High School is the best dubbed anime I've ever seen. Cowboy Bebop is probably a close second. (Granted, I have not seen a whole lot of anime that's been released in the last 15 years, maybe it's all drastically improved by now.)

Final Fantasy XII is the only video game dub I genuinely liked in anything other than an ironic sense. And it's a good thing it didn't suck, given that I am a huge Matsuno stan and would've been incredibly pissed if they ruined one of his masterpieces with "okay" voice acting. ;)

I'm biased because I love the series regardless of dubs or subs, but I do like the dubbing for xxxHolic (with the exception of Mokona who sounds like he's stuck half-way taking a shit when he talks, but for some reason a lot of American dubs for cutesy 'mascot' characters got this kind of voice at one period of time so idk).

Also the FMA dubs - hate Vic Mignogna, but I have to admit that I thought both the old and Brotherhood were done well.

I hate Vic too, but he was a great Ed. I liked him as Tamaki, Fai, and Broly, but he’s got one of those distinctive voices that makes it hard to separate the character from the actor, so I have a tough time watching anything he played a big role in.

The Funimation dub for YuYu Hakusho is awesome and greatly enhances the show. I know a lot of people don’t like them, but I have a soft spot for a lot anime that was dubbed for kids in the ‘90s/‘00s like Yu-Gi-Oh, Digimon, Shaman King, Tokyo Mew Mew/Mew Mew Power, and Sailor Moon. I think the Viz dub for Sailor Moon is good too, but I wish they’d gone for a different VA for Usagi (love Stephanie Sheh, but I don’t think her voice fits Usagi).

I love the Latin American Spanish dubs for The Simpsons, Kamisama Kiss, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, Saint Seiya, Inuyasha, and Digimon Tamers.

Yes! The 90's english dubs for Yugioh, Digimon, and Sailor Moon are my favorites. I just do not want to watch those shows in any other language. I think Digimon is a real standout here too because they went all out localizing it even (especially!) for the movies and it makes the show so much better. I also prefer the early 2000's HxH dub over subs and the 2011 remake.

Digimon’s such an interesting case to me because they didn’t make the dub names too different from the Japanese version and they mention places like Odaiba while other dubs would go to great lengths to hide that the shows originated in Japan. I only watched up to Tamers, but all the dubs were great and I was so glad that Tri and Kizuna got back most of the cast.

DA

I actually read an interview a long time ago with one of the localizers for the original Digimon series, and shockingly, he said originally they had intended not to bring up Japan because they didn't know yet that the kids would go home from the digital world mid-series. He said when they found that out, they would have hidden that it was Japan but they couldn't figure out how, so they gave up trying.

The reason they wanted to cover it up, though? He said they thought kids would be confused about why Japanese characters had spent the whole show speaking English. I found the whole thing very weird since... kids know what dubbing is, and also they kept the characters' Japanese names in the first episode and bothered to point out that the Americanized first names they used were actually nicknames.

Now I have to watch the Spanish dub of Kamisama Kiss! I really enjoyed the English dub (the guy who voices Erwin-- his voice I love! -- voiced the lead romance interest). That and Inuyasha lol

Agreeing 100% on YYH, the voices were AMAZING! Really added depth to all the characters.

The Spanish dub for Kamisama Kiss is all available on YouTube for free! They do have ads, but it’s not too bad. I love that they translated the opening and ending songs. I miss when English dubs used to do that. Here’s the link: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhLIuhReJ4ce51VlQOdpiNu-5HWucZY6F

I wish I could find Inuyasha in Spanish. I was hoping Funimation might’ve gotten the rights to that dub since they expanded to Latin America, but they only have Yashahime in Spanish (not a fan of Yashahime, but that dub’s pretty good too from what I’ve seen).

AYRT

Thanks for the link!

Ohhhh. That really sucks -- for some reason I misread your comment and thought there already existed a Spanish dub for Inuyasha :/

Oh no, a Spanish dub for Inuyasha definitely exists! My family used to go to Mexico every other year and I remember watching it on the hotel TV. I just can’t find a way to legally stream it here. Sorry for the confusion.

Gokudo remains the gold standard and no one can convince me otherwise.

I don't usually bother with simuldubs but the Sk8 dub is unexpectedly charming. It helps that the show is over the top anyway but they're also clearly having a blast with the subtext (Cherry and Joe's VAs absolutely ship it and it's hilarious).

Full metal alchemist, rurouni kenshin, ghost in the shell are all pretty good quality dubs. Sacrilegious thought but I really prefer them over subs because the young men/ pretty boys are always dubbed by women in japanese and I just can't unhear that.
