I always wonder what fandoms this crops up in because I've never seen it in any of mine, I'm not saying it isn't a thing I'm just curious as to why my fandoms seem to be completely absent of it. It is an anime/cartoon fandom thing?

Yeah, I think it's a generational and genre thing. In western media, there are some rock performers who play with Lolita, but it's pretty clear that they're not adolescents.

The 80s though.... Between all the songs about sexy schoolgirls and best-selling novelists being weird about underage sexuality....

I can see it absolutely being a thing that crops up with younger fans, and younger fans to tend to migrate towards cartoons/anime a lot(just noting my own experience in fandom), because outside of seeing it mentioned on here I've literally never seen anyone seriously call a character 'child-coded'. But then all my fandoms are live-action, all the characters are adults and any that aren't are very obviously not, but if you're dealing with drawn images I can see how that can lend to people arguing that x/y character is 'child-coded' because I know determining the age of characters in cartoons can be... tricky.

Doubly so for female characters because just speaking for myself I know I've watched shows where I thought female characters were adults, because they had the same proportions as the other adult women in the show, then found out they were teens and was very confused.

Oh god, I like some 80's music but hearing all the lyrics about them perving on underage girls as an adult just... it sets my teeth on edge.

Yeah, for some reason, "Centerfold" popped to mind as a notorious example where both the lyrics and video performance are doing this thing of adult women who are also sexy schoolgirls. If you do a very close listen, it's all one guy's pervy imagination, but who was bothering to do a close listen to radio play?

Animation can also be tricky because you can have characters flip from very adult to very childlike in the same episode. So unless age is explicitly stated or there's a clear age gradient going on, it can be difficult to assess age.

who was bothering to do a close listen to radio play?

Everybody who listened to the radio back then knew all the lyrics. It's obviously someone reminiscing about his high school crush who sees her YEARS later in a porn mag.

The offensive element of the song, to me, is the guy judging her for being a centerfold, tbh.

I don't play video games, but I'm gonna be honest: a creator specifically putting an immortal character into the body of a pre-teen, while dressing them in skimpy clothes, is a very specific design choice that does not make me feel inclined to give that creator the benefit of the doubt.

I don't think the creators of characters like Nowi are even asking you to give them the benefit of the doubt. It's pretty obvious that they're designed for fans of lolicon.

Seconding this. I believe it's a thing. Enough people talk about it that it's clearly a real thing. But I've never seen it happening first hand.
