Fucking PLUS ONE.

This really irritates me because there's an element of infantilization to it. A sixteen year old is capable of consent in a sexual situation in a way that someone under twelve isn't. I've seen pedophilia accusations thrown at a twenty year-old involved with someone in their thirties. As you said, the power imbalance and different life stages makes it iffy, but can we be a bit more discerning? A twenty year-old can enlist in the military, can drink in many countries, can get married, etc. Let's please not call them children victimised by pedophiles.

I see where you're coming from.

At the same time, there's a reason that this argument has been viewed with suspicion on the internet - because, historically, the primary people making this motivation have been men who want to diminish the social stigma against dating teenagers, because they want to date teenagers. That's the background the whole "actually, it's ephebophilia" stereotype comes from. And I think that's bad.

So I'm not necessarily disagreeing with your argument. I just think it's tricky but important to reckon with both things at the same time.

Oh, men who want to commit statutory rape on young girls are still the primary people making this argument, don't worry. Them and young girls who are convinced that they're so mature for their age and that's why adult men are trying to "date" them. There IS a valid argument to be made for a differentiation between statutory rape of 16 year old and statutory rape of 6 year old; one is definitely more reprehensible than the other. However, there are absolutely some really excellent reasons to keep the stigma and legal penalties for the former as stiff as possible (exceptions for romeo and juliet laws apart), and every single adult man (and lord, there are SO MANY) who argues for the diminished stigmatization of them fucking 10th graders is one of them.
