Music over the last 25 or so years would have been immeasurably better if Nirvana had never broken big

DA - Seconding this. I'm pretty sure I strongly disagree (I love that raw, underproduced quality early-mid 90's music had), but I can't be sure I disagree without knowing OP's reasoning.

I guess my point is, those bands would still be there if Nirvana didn't break into the mainstream, they just would have continued being mostly underground, like they had been since the mid 80s

I think there were some really interesting fusion-y things going on in early 90s popular music, including popular rock music, before the Nirvana grunge boom took over - you had a lot of world music, a lot of stuff combining different genres. Admittedly a lot of it sucked - but it could have gone in interesting directions that might have ended up looking like what's happened now, where a lot of genre boundaries have really dissolved.

And then at the same time, I don't know if grunge and alternative rock were actually that well served by entering the mainstream. A lot of awful music got made by grunge and post-grunge bands, and I kind of wonder - you know, not that it's Nirvana's fault, but in a sort of sliding-doors, butterfly-causing-a-hurricane way, if Nirvana doesn't become a pop sensation, do you end up getting all of the Woodstock 99 type of rock in the commercial mainstream?

IDK I just think it's an interesting hypothetical. Nirvana were undeniably a great band but I don't think a lot of the bands who followed them or were inspired by the whole alt-rock grunge movement to the commercial mainstream were good at all.

I am not personally fond of Nirvana and I don't like today's music either so in a sense I agree?

absolutely disagree. I was in the music industry in the 90s, there's a lot of incredible music that would have never been made or even dreamed of if not for Nirvana. And i don't even really like Nirvana.

The 90s was a time of massive genre splitting, as well as a time before the internet rewrote the distribution of music to the consumer, so small bands could still enjoy a decent career playing small shows in small towns and selling small amounts of their albums because they were all trying to get noticed by the labels, who were in turn desperately trying to figure out what might be the next big thing and subsequently pushing everything and anything just in case it worked out. The actual problem, as it has always been, is the industry itself. The corporate machine always chews up and spits out more victims (both creative and not) than can escape its maw, and it has that extra layer of ick when it's music or art fields where personal creativity is supposed to be part of the mix but too much personal creativity can turn a sure monetary bet into a risk. The music industry basically gambles on people's creative juices to turn a buck. The most successful artists of all time have managed to somehow ride that beast and turn it into a symbiotic, beneficial relationship, but they are always few and far between. As it was in 1950, 1970, 1990, and is still.

I agree. I didn't like Nirvana but I think they were a necessary presence.
