What significant flashbulb memories do you have?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-12 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"A flashbulb memory is a highly detailed, exceptionally vivid "snapshot" of the moment and circumstances in which a piece of surprising and consequential (or emotionally arousing) news was learned about."

When Yami Bakura first graced our world through our television screens. Lmfao. Honest to god, that was the first thought that popped into my mind.

I got four. Two are a bit more serious than the other two.

I distinctly remember when Eddie Guerrero the WWE wrestler died. My sister woke me up as I was napping to tell me. This was when I was really into WWE and he was one my favs. I was so upset. The second is when I found out Heath Ledger died. Some woman at a table behind me in college asked me if I had heard he died. No clue why that is one since I am not really a fan of him.

Another is the Columbine shooting. I remember coming home from school and watching it on TV. I was at my grandma's house and I just say in front of the TV watching it. I was 10 so someone probably shouldn't have. The last one is 9/11. The teacher a classroom over ran over to tell my teacher. They brought a TV in to turn the news on. Watching the news and discussing it was basically what we did all day.

eta: I think January 6th will be become one. I streamed it at work the whole day. Horrifying.

Yep. That day sticks out for me, too. I also saw it on TV-I'd come home from school and my dad had the news on. I saw the kids running out of the school and I actually remember saying, "Oh, god, another one?", because there'd been a few other shootings up to that point (in fact, I'd just done a report on school shootings a few days before Columbine happened). Little did I know how common that question would become...:/.

I was 14 at the time, and in eighth grade/ I remember going to school the next day and everyone just seemed very anxious and on edge. We even talked about the tragedy in a few of my classes.

This was the first one I was ever aware of. I also have a distinct memory of watching the kids being escorted out in groups and dangling out of windows.

Listening to the news on the car radio about 911 and crying.

Quite a few and...not all of them good. One that specifically comes to mind is the day when I learned of my grandpa having a heart attack.

You just reminded me of mine too. Standing in the kitchen at age 8 and being told that my Nan had died. My parents have had the kitchen changed since then but in that memory I can remember all the old details.

As far as world news, definitely 9/11; I viscerally remember hearing the news, specifically my mother saying "the pentagon is IN FLAMES" and pulling me out of my music lesson to watch the news.

Other than that, I guess each time I heard big family news - deaths, marriages, pregnancies, births... that type of things I can always remember where I was, how I heard, what everyone was wearing, etc. When I heard I was actually hired for my first job.

I have a ton of them, related to PTSD from a traumatic childhood, since I have flashbacks and dissociate. And I do not care to discuss the content of any of them, since it would probably cause another flashback - I just kinda shy away as soon as I remember they exist so that I don't think directly about them. :/
