I can understand your frustration, even though I feel the exact opposite. I love mild, informal D/s dynamics, and subs are always bottoms for me, that's just what I like.

This is coming from someone who is just as confused as you, but I assume top/bottom only goes for penetrative sex and literally refers to "giver"/"receiver" (really sorry I'm bad with English words? Can you tell I only read fluff?!) while dom/sub refers to being more aggressive or passive etc. regardless of positions? Am I wrong? help

Yup, pretty much this. Top and bottom generally just denote whose dick goes into whose ass.

But if you tag a character as a Dom purely because they top, when they literally don't do anything sexually Dominant in the fic, then that's going to be misleading to people who are actively looking for D/s fics. They're looking for a dynamic of dominance and submission, not just two characters having penetrative sex.

You're on the right track, but in kink/rl terms, Dominant and Submissive are roles in a D/s relationship, and while the minor details of what a Dom and a Sub want out of their particular relationship, there are very much certain expectations for both roles.

Granted, in a lot of yaoi manga tradition, the top does have a lot of Dom traits and the bottom has a lot of sub traits, but it's not a one-to-one equal correlation. Throw in the way fandom likes to say they hate the seme/uke dynamic but then writes the same thing in their fic and labels it Dom/sub, well...the waters are very muddy, there. You're not wrong to be confused.

I just wish D/s, BDSM and similar trends weren’t just so casually accepted and expected these days. By which I mean, I wish more people actually used those tags so I knew what to avoid. I’ve read far too many fic that just brings it in with no warning.

But also, yeah, death to the top/bottom emphasis too.
