I don't really wish death of loved ones on anyone. That marriage lasted longer than some people's lifetimes.

Does anyone think she won't miss him?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-16 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, what an odd statement.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-17 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure people are thinking about that part. Most of the comments I see are just celebrating his death or cracking jokes.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-17 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think any of those people would deny that the Queen misses him on a personal level.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-17 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
... I didn't say they would deny it?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-16 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. 70 years is a long time to have someone by your side as a spouse and, if you think about it, a co-worker. I do feel for her, as she's in a very lonely place as far as generational peers in her family go.

I think plenty of people have acknowledged the very human cost of losing your spouse, best friend, life partner, whatever you want to call it. I've been married nearly seven years (so roughly a tenth of that time) and of course if I lost my husband tomorrow I'd be devastated, so I can very easily imagine the Queen will miss hers a LOT.

What I don't like is how legitimate discussions about the insanity that has swept across the UK the past few days are getting shot down by people getting way too invested and saying "omg that's her husband of 70+ years, you monster!" - like, you can feel sorry for her as a human, woman and wife and still think that the wall to wall grief-porn directed at those of us who didn't know either of them is a bit much?

(Anonymous) 2021-04-17 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
I mean people could just not read or watch any of it? It's not really insanity to report on what is an historic event? I'm not big on royals news but I just don't click the links and have been sticking to Netflix. I wish people would take responsibility for their own goddamn lives, or at least grow up and not complain because they had to wait for the goddamn MasterChef final because there was something big going on in the news.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-17 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
i take it you're american because what is happening in the uk isn't just news reporting on a historic event. what an ignorant comment

(Anonymous) 2021-04-17 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
DA - yes, Americans are not at all familiar with the way media can turn a historic event into non-stop spectacles lacking all critical thought...

(Anonymous) 2021-04-17 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently they're just not capable of realizing that not everything is about them. Or maybe that's just you.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-18 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
sa- indeed. also they are self absorbed twats feeling personally offended when anyone suggests they are being ignorant of another country's affairs

(Anonymous) 2021-04-17 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
i literally can't watch the new atm because its wall to wall 'THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH HAS DIED!!' and i. don't. care. it's sodding impossible to avoid royal news in this country because for some reason we're all supposed to care.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-17 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You aren't British and it shows. When something happens to one of them we get nothing but news about it for a solid month, there is literally no escape from it unless we just stop watching any news programming entirely, and I like to know what's going on in the world but I've got to sit through at least 10-15 mins about them if I want to find out.

Imagine having to put up with that multiple times a year, every year. You'd complain too.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-17 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh what a circus! Oh what a show!

BP just released this photo their daughter in law took about 15 years ago and it’s the happiest i’ve ever seen the queen look

(Anonymous) 2021-04-17 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's really nice. One for the album.

(But I'm counded by BP. The Black Prince? Bonnie Prince Charlie? British Petroleum?)

(Anonymous) 2021-04-17 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Buckingham Palace, I'm guessing. :)

(Anonymous) 2021-04-17 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, my grandfather and grandmother were marries for like sixty years, and when she died he just withered. He lived three more years but he just seemed so ancient after her death, and like there was only a little bit of him left.

I guess one way of looking at it is that they got to love someone that much for that long. Still breaks your heart, though.
