I have no strong opinions about new Trek

But complaining about Trek being too fantastical and not hard SF enough, and Trek alien races being too human, is pretty rich. It's Star Trek. That's what it does

I actually feel they are making a point of designing and portraying aliens as LESS like "humans wearing cheap make-up and prosthetics", which makes it feel like "gritty SF" to me, and not very Trek-like.

I like what the did with the new series. But then, I always preferred Star Wars over Star Trek before - so take that in that contact. I like the characters and the fact it's more fast-paced and action-driven.

I mean, Star Trek has always been notorious for alien species that differ primarily in forehead makeup and whatever philosophical/political axe the writers wanted to grind that week. And Klingons didn't even get forehead knobs or a different language until the movies. TOS they were a thin metaphor for the cold war (different from the other aliens who were metaphor for Korea/Vietnam, but everyone kindly pretends that planet doesn't really exist, along with the planet of the Native American stereotypes).

How are they erasing the legacy of certain black characters? The super-special hero at the centre of Discovery is a black woman, and a large percentage of the bridge crew are POC.

Not op

I'm curious about this myself. I would guess Sisko?

Yeah this is sure a weird take on OP's behalf. Micheal being the protagonist of this show isn't taking anything away from past black-characters, she's just a new one, that's all.

New Trek is a steaming pile of shite.
