I feel like I'm missing a LOT of drama context

The hero's dad was an asshole, so he vowed to never have kids and to end the family line as retaliation. But he falls in love and gets married to the heroine, BUT he tells her that he's unable to have kids and doesn't mention the other bit. He just has sex with her, but pulls out. The heroine (they're married at this point and she really, really wants a huge family) takes advantage of him while he's drunk and rides him so he can't pull out, and promptly gets pregnant and it breaks up their relationship temporarily.

Modern sounding characters wearing pretty gowns and going to balls is fine

Becauwe there's lots of fun historical trappings to history and there's no good reason for those trappings to be limited to historical characters

personally I prefer when such things are done using fantastical or SFnal settings but what are you gonna do

I don't mind it in sf/fantasy settings, but when something is marketed as a historical, I want it to be more historical.
