T. Kingfisher aka Ursula Vernon writes some fun ones; they're set in a really interesting fantasy world and mostly have sensible characters doing their best as opposed to perfect in every way heroes and heroines.

There's Swordheart, about a poor relation reluctantly inheriting a house and collection of curiosities including a man enchanted into a sword, and Paladin's Grace and Paladin's Strength, about paladins learning to live again after their god dies. There's also the two Clocktaur War books in the same world, which have a romance but also a suicide mission to end a war driven by literal killing machines.

Well, I don't read straight up romance. What I do read is erotic romance. One of my favorite authors is Joey Hill. I love that she has a variety of different scenarios. She writes maledom, femdom, switches, M/M, F/F, all sorts of things. And I love her characters. She's great at writing characters I'm interested in. My absolute favorite of her books are "Holding the Cards" and "Natural Law," but everything she's written is great.

I like some of Cherise Sinclair's stuff because although she writes strictly dom male/sub female, the characters are believable and interesting, and the BDSM relationships have actual BDSM rules. And personally I prefer stories where there are rules and boundaries over the typical erotic romance dynamic where the man is dominant, but there aren't rules, and it is really BDSM without calling it that and without the rules that make BDSM work.

Some of Evangeline Anderson's stuff also hot. And she's really creative with all sorts of different scenarios.

And then there is Wicked Burn by Beth Kerry. Nothing about this book is something I would normally like, but the sex scenes are written so hot I really don't care.

Contemporary:
Talia Hibbert (The Brown Sisters Trilogy)
Helen Hoang (The Bride Test is chefs kiss -- I'm waiting for the one featuring my favorite guy tho)
Mhairi McFarlane (If I never met you is my fave)

All these authors have their characters (and love interests) grow as people! It's fucking great! And the sex is sexy! (I kinda preferred the scenes in Helen Hoang's first book, and in Hibbert's last book). Christina Lauren is also good for contemporary with sexy sex scenes.

Historical (please don't judge me because they're all ridiculous and tropey but such a good time and always put me in a good mood)
Tessa Dare

Courtney Milan does historical romance, and she's got some good, well-researched, diverse stuff coming up. And frankly, she writes some lgbt+ stuff, which is w i l d as a mainstream historical romance author, so. In other words, check out the Worth Saga with novellas. The Duchess War is considered one of her best.
