I think he just doesn't want to bother finishing it and his plan really is to just keep shuffling out of it till he does, but he is mad about getting called out about it

I feel like we're past the point of "speculating". He's not gonna finish it. He's not gonna finish another book. Not a health thing either, it's just never gonna happen. If he wants to spare his blushes and pretend he's still planning on finishing it, fair enough, but let's be real.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-28 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It wouldn't be so annoying is (historically) he wasn't so adamant about not passing it off to another fantasy writer with his notes to finish. I guess that is why we have fanfiction.

I read a really great one that really tied everything together for me. The whole fic was a great last stand at Winterfell with the whole world on the line. It was the most satisfying ending I'll probably ever get and I should probably just read it again now that I'm sad I won't get a real book again.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-28 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
What fic is it? I've read a few that were endgame and really great.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-29 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
OK, jeeze. I just wrote up this huge message about how I couldn't find it and how losing it felt worse than realizing I'd never get Dream...but I think I found it.

In This Light by SigilBroken

None of the stories in the series have summaries, and I don't have time to read through the 90k of it to make sure, but I'm pretty sure. It's J/B and Brienne focused. I hope you enjoy it!

Lol! That was me asking for the story. I was on my kindle and not logged in. I was looking in my bookmarks for my fav end game GoT fics. In This Light was the first GoT story (series) I ever bookmarked. And I read it before I actually watched the show.

I'm happy I found it honestly, I'll read it again this weekend.

I really like how it just *skips* everything between canon and Dany ruling Westeros. I kind of wish GRRM would do it that way honestly. Just Alexander the Great the Meereenese knot and give us 500 pages of what we really want, but then I remember he's written two chapters of Arianne going to meet Joh Connington. Two whole chapters. And she didn't even make it to her intermediate goal. Yeah.

I was pretty bored at points reading the last two so I get it when people say he's written himself into a corner and can't be bothered to pick up the bits he isn't as fussed about.

I'll be contented with fanfic if I ever feel like dipping my toe back into that universe and the "how will it end?" questions. It's coming up for ten years since the last book? I think everyone gave up expecting him to finish it ages ago just because the gap between books got bigger and you can't help drawing that conclusion.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-28 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, fuck, I gave up years ago. (Which was one of the reasons I was hugely disappointed in the show's conclusion. I thought "at least we'll get an ending" but I definitely was not prepared for one so badly botched. And just so we're clear, I'm talking about how rushed and badly stitched together it was, and not the event themselves.)

If we get TWoW before he dies, I'll be surprised. Nevermind the last book. I expect nothing at this point.

He could live another 1000 years as a head in a Futurama jar and not finish the series. Even if, IF, he gets out Winds we'll still need Dream and I just don't see it happening. He's taken on more projects and kind of just wants to noodle on Targaryens anyway.

George, if you're reading this: it's ok. I'd like a good ending but I hit Denial in 2015 and Anger with Season 8 and now I'm swimming in the cool waters of Acceptance. Do what makes you happy dude.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-28 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah I don't see him finishing the books either, and not because of health stuff, but because it's pretty clear he's either written himself in a corner or his interest just isn't there anymore, but god knows that man would never be able to actually say that: fans of the series would go nuts.

Personally I stopped caring when I dropped the show in s4 and s8's utterly fubar'd resolution just kicked that disinterest right into hell. He can leave the series as it is and do what he wants as far as I'm concerned.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-28 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
He could be a healthy 20-year old and I doubt he'd still ever finish the books. He's just made them so much bigger and unfocused, with so many more characters and side-plots, that I don't think he knows how to bring it all back together again to a finish.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-28 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
All of this is true, but I still don't blame him for being annoyed by the half of the fanbase that won't shut up about how he's going to pop his clogs any minute now.

(Anonymous) 2021-04-29 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think he'll finish them if he lives another 30 years, but people have been acting like he was about to die any minute for well over a decade, based on nothing. There's a distinct tinge of "he's FAT and FAT people are always on the edge of death".

(Anonymous) 2021-04-29 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, not really based on nothing. Yes, his weight is part of it, but also his age, not to mention if he dies, he won't be the first author to let a series that a lot of folks are into go unfinished.

But I'm also sure it's annoying to hear from his side. Either way, a lot of folks just need to come to terms with reality.

DA - His age has just started to catch up to the imminent death rumors, which have been flying around since the man was in his fifties.

I've never read the series and I have no desire to, but from this outsider's perspective it's been obvious for a good long while that he has no intention of continuing work on this series. Nothing to do with his health or lack thereof, I just honestly don't think he cares to go back to it. I feel bad for the fans that this happened to them, and I will be very happy alongside them if we get the surprise of the century and he does turn out the last books.
I have other things I'm hoping will happen that have a better chance of actually happening though.

When I'm reading stuff like how he's having to rely on fans to keep him straight on the details of his own created world...yeesh, that's not a good sign.
