I don't like when RL partners are included either.

see, this is where I legit can't with RPF...I mean I can't at any level, but actors, there is some slight plausibility of their public face being a put-o. Athletes? Nah. There is no such thing as a "persona" and if you want to read about hockey athletes being magical transforming werewolves who fuck each other (yes I have seen this on AO3, trying to filter out RPF when looking for monsterfucking is really hard) well...I for real just can't with that level of taste in either reading or writing it. Nope. That's real people. It's gross.

I would disagree for the athletes have to be at the mic not infrequently. There's def a persona for the very famous ones. Besides, they are all brands now (in that the ability to grow their brand is an important part of agent/manager-athlete relationship; and their social media is part of their assets that they sell for sponsorships), so in fact it's MORE like they have a persona in recent times than before.

I agree that most all of them have a persona, for sure.

IA. I generally don't like too much of the characters' (for lack of a better word) real lives to come into fic. My understanding of the characters is mostly a composite built from press, fic and fandom, not based on the people themselves but ideas that look like them, have their jobs and some of their personality, but it's not actually them. Including partners or past partners for me crosses a line from the distanced, fictional version of the character to being a weird and invasive attempt to rewrite someone's actual life and relationships.

I don't know. I mean, I'm with you in general but then again, I don't think they should split up from their real life partners or whatever just because I wrote stupid fanfic about it. I don't take RPF seriously is my point, I guess, so (never wrote it, but) I don't feel judgmental about it. I think it's just very funny and ironic, that some people - plenty on F!S - will be all "ohh what's the matter with enjoying a bit of HARDCORE S&M RAPE INCESTUOUS PEDOPHILIA fanfic, it's all fiction! Antis are no fun!", and then proceed to be annoyed at RPF because "omg this character has the name of a celebrity and was loosely inspired by them how COULD they?!". People weird

ayrt

omg the amount of hate and disgust some people have for rpf is insane! Like yeah, if you're showing it to the celebs themselves or believing the fic is revealing some hidden truth, sure, that's messed up, but in general rpf is just stupid fun. I rarely think of the real people or their lives when reading fic that's obstensibly about them; it's kind of like playing dolls in written form.

re. partners: I should clarify it's only the main characters, ie the ones I'm shipping, that I don't want partners included. Side characters I tend to expect existing partners will be mentioned where relevant. It's like the partner is part of the characterisation of that character. But if I'm shipping, I'm either not interested or not cool with actual intimate relationships being intermingled with fictional intimate relationships.

lol this is such a good description FS.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-07 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
This is so true. I am so so so very tired of seeing such pearl clutching, snide remarks and sometimes outright vitriol towards RPF and RPF writers, especially in spaces that ostensibly understand the concepts of DLDR, KINKTOMATO and so on.

They use exactly the same "logic" as antis use - 'it makes me uncomfortable therefore it's objectively bad' and it fucking does my head in. What's worse than an anti? An anti who doesn't know they're an anti!

(Anonymous) 2021-05-07 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, whenever I read RPF, I filter it as a public persona. Like, this is not actually 'Actor Man', it's the character 'Actor Man' who just happens to be set in this uncannily modern Earthlike AU.

1) I love RPF. I don't much interest in sports at all (despite being from a Big Hockey Town). But Hockey RPF is sooo good! I don't know why. The writers seem good at making the characters and situations relatable to people who don't know what's going on otherwise. But even though I had no idea who half those characters were at first, I ended up like "ooh, tell me more, I hope Jack will man up and tell Connor he loves him!"

2) Unless the partner is another celebrity, I'd rather RPF writers try to leave out the RL partners in any type of RPF. It can otherwise lead you to go down some bizarrely invasive rabbit holes about people who don't want to be famous. But if the partner *is* another famous person, it irritates me when they're left out or bashed. *shrug* I guess because then it feels less like politely leaving them alone and more like a ship war.

I can't get over the use of a picture of Crosby and Malkin here. We call them the two headed monster. OMG now every time I hear that I am going to die laughing LOL

P.S. I had no idea this ship existed

(Anonymous) 2021-05-07 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
My favorite hockey fic is Crosby and Malkin and I had to google what they looked like because I don't watch hockey.

A lot of it is really good writing about two athletes, and it's kind of irrelevant to me who they are. They're fictional as far as I'm concerned as a slash reader, but I like the foreign partner learning English and visa drama and stuff like that.

To address the main point, though, I would hate to be Sid's sister and google my own name now.

I wish writers could use fake names for other characters who aren't famous.
