Not anon you are replying too, but I'm one of the few who prefers the Burton/Depp one. I was a huge fan of that book growing up, and Wilder's Wonka was just nothing like the book character. He was too nice and felt almost sanitized. I love Wilder as an actor, but not in this role. I know I'm fairly alone in this. But I just tend to prefer when adaptions understand the characters and themes of what they are adapting. The newer one made plot changes, but they fit in with the themes of the book (they were the weakest parts of the movie, but they didn't ruin it).

what about the "no matter what ridiculous rules your parents make they have your best interests at heart" nonsense of the Depp Wonka movie?? I hate to think of some kid with an abusive parent watching that.

I didn't really get that message from it, certainly not saying abuse is okay.

the whole thing about Depp!Wonka's father (who wasn't even in the book) not letting him ever have any candy.

I know that part, I just don't think the message of that part was that extreme. The message was about healing relationships with family and that family is important. It goes without saying that this means loving family, not abusive family. His father wasn't abusive. Wonka and he were just very different and didn't understand each other, and yet the father had followed Wonka's career and successes all along. It fits with the book because Charlie had his family and they were important to him, and story made a clear the distinction between Charlie's family and families of the other kids who were not good parents.

Never letting a kid have candy and taking it away and burning it is not being a good parent.

In real life, sure, though I wouldn't call it abuse. But the world of Charlie and the Chocolate factory is super exaggerated. In that context, I don't have a problem with it in the movie. It fits with all the stylized extremes that Dahl himself wrote in the story.

I mean, Burton's insistence on inserting daddy issues into other people's work is worthy of an eyeroll in this case (and misunderstands Dahl's folk reference), but Wonka having a dad is one of the more forgettable parts of the adaptation.

I genuinely would agree with you if not for two things:

1.) the B-side story about Wonka's own father/upbringing, which felt bizarre and tacked on (maybe too much of Burton's own voice leaking in here), and

2.) I will never forgive it for the character assassination of Mike Teevee. Like, I get that they had to "upgrade" him for modern audiences, but holy shit it not only completely missed the point with him, it made the opposite one. Mike was supposed to be just kinda... dumb and childishly selfish, because TV rotted his brain out-- he was probably the most "normal" kid aside from Charlie. New!Mike is this fuckin ultra-intelligent hyper-violent piece of shit sociopath. Like what? He genuinely made the movie almost unwatchable. I know you're not supposed to root for the "bad" kids, but they weren't supposed to be evil.

Depp made the intentional decision to play Wonka like Michael Jackson welcoming kids to Neverland Ranch for a sleepover. I’m sorry that you think that’s truer to the source material than the Wilder version, but for all the other issues with Dahl’s work I never got pedo vibes off Wonka.

Depp! I haven't had the chance to see the old one yet.
