Guess who played FFVII first and sobbed at the first few disappearances-petrifications-and-whatnot only to realize it was like Dragon Ball Z: The Game (granted, I was happy BUT)

Anyway, FFIV has... quite a few plot holes or just weird plot points, but I love the cast!
pantswarrior: A montage of several crystals from the Final Fantasy series. (final fantasy)

Yeah, it is definitely a weird hodge-podge. Someone I know described it as a GM running their own homebrew tabletop game that stole elements from pretty much every setting. "Fantasy crystals! Now there are more of them and a whole other world underground! Giant robot! Now you're on the moon!" But when you pare the plot way back and don't think too much about certain weirdnesses, the character and the general plot of the thing are really epic, and it's always going to be one of my faves.

And ooooops, heh. Yes, reversing the order of those two games would make it a rather different experience...

AYRT - Yes, for real. And, LOL, that's the best way of putting it.

I’m going to drop a rec here. Tales of Hearts is what happens when you have a lot of the weird setting bullshit from Final Fantasy IV, and then you also have realistic setting bullshit at the same time. There are believably corrupt governments trying to figure out the best way to manipulate the genocidal moon aliens to their advantage. It’s glorious.

...Yeah, I'm pretty much the only person in my circle of friends who isn't obsessed with Tales (and in fact has never played one - mostly because I didn't have the right consoles for the ones I was told were really good, but looks like this was on the DS? I have that! My 3DS still works even!), so I expect there is some good stuff in there. Did not expect it to be that odd though. ;)

Health problems have prevented me from doing much other than mobile gaming (lack of ability to focus on plot or strategy over the pain being a large part of it) for the last several years, but I would definitely give it a shot if I ever become able again. From the stuff I've seen them get up to in their cosplay shoots and so on, it seems like a fun series. =)

“There are believably corrupt governments trying to figure out the best way to manipulate the genocidal moon aliens to their advantage.”

I initially read this as “trying to figure out the best way to manipulate the genocidal moons to their advantage” and immediately decided that I need to play this game at the earliest opportunity. Manipulating the moon aliens makes much more sense and still sounds amazing. (But part of me is still slightly disappointed, not going to lie.)

Final Fantasy IV is kind of a beautiful mess, and I would love to see a remake with shinier graphics and the like, while changing as little as possible.
pantswarrior: Edward, from FFIV, hiding. (ffiv)

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2021-05-08 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That is basically what I got from the Complete Collection (which is about 50% of why I own a PSP - the other 50% is FF Tactics because I am sliiiightly obsessed with Matsuno/Ivalice :D). Still sprite-based graphics, but not 16-bit sprite-based graphics, much smoother animations and more detail, far better translation (and no voice acting THANK YOU). Basically it looked like what FFIV always looked like in my head.

Though they remixed some of the music and like... that crazy bassline was always really prominent in the final boss theme and I couldn't hear it all and it made the fight seem really weird. I think you can change it back to the non-remix music, but it wasn't so off-putting until that moment that I hadn't. XD

Also includes The After Years, which uhhh... your mileage may vary. But it is included so that everyone can make up their own mind about it, at least. One of my friends who is similarly obsessed with FFIV absolutely loathes it and makes fun of it at every possibility, but it has some high points (like Edward gets to be kind of quietly badass, and I appreciate his character a lot even if he is a sucky party member). ;)
