(Anonymous) 2021-05-08 02:24 am (UTC)(link)From what I understand, there were two families (probably inter-related), and they alternated which family got to put a king on the throne. Malcolm, the grandfather of Duncan, killed the previous king and took the throne. It should have gone to Macbeth after, but instead Duncan succeeded his father, going completely against the tradition. In fact, it was even more untraditional for a grandson to be king, but Malcolm only had daughters. But Malcolm wanted to change the system in Scotland to a primogeniture throne. Anyway, Duncan was a terrible king. Macbeth killed Duncan in battle, married a woman named Gruach and took the throne.
Also, Macbeth was actually supposedly a good king. He ruled for 14 years until the son and brother of Duncan together fought and killed him. And yes, he was probably a cousin of Duncan, so they were related.
Also these families/clans had been warring each other long before any of the people who show up in the play are born.
